Stealing some of the focus off Melbourne’s Caulfield Cup, this year’s The Everest (1200m) looks the most intriguing yet.

Nature Strip will set a blistering pace and will have the big guns breathing down his neck in the closing stages with the likes of five-time Group 1 champ Santa Ana Lane and Chris Waller’s gun mare Arcadia Queen tipped to run over the top of him late.

The rails-drawn Pierata has been the best in form this spring and is out to frank the Concorde Stakes – The Shorts form, races he ran second and first respectively in close finishes.

Three-year-old Yes Yes Yes has some fans in The Everest betting out of the Golden Rose (2nd), the form of which is hard to stack-up in open company here.

Redzel for Team Snowden chases an historic three-peat in The Everest and is not without claims despite drawing his widest yet (7), while Godolphin opted to keep their class mare Alizee fresh for this and she’s a winning hope with Hugh Bowman aboard.

To help readers sort the sprinters to back and sack in The Everest 2019 are our exclusive selections below.

To Win: #9 Sunlight ($14)

Great odds on Sunlight who will be peaking fourth-up here. This Zoustar mare is all heart and is more than up to this at her best. Third in the TJ Smith Stakes last time at this track / distance, forgivable from a wide alley. Better gate here and beat Santa Ana Lane by a half-length in the Gilgai Stakes. WFA doesn’t have her best placed, but she’ll be suited to the fast pace and can win even though she prefers the Flemington track over Randwick.

Each Way: #3 Redzel ($11)

He’s done it twice before and there’s something about this seven-year-old that has us holding our breath for the three-peat. Rain around would be better for him, but it’s the fairytale result. Hard not to throw an Each Way punt on that story alone. Form stacks up too. If you like Pierata then Redzel can win. First-up Concorde Stakes win then The Shorts third form inside alley. Winning trial since at Gosford.

Danger: #1 Santa Ana Lane ($4.40)

Deserving favourite. Has been easily the overall best sprinter in the country over the past 12 months. What he did in the TJ Smith Stakes here in the autumn was phenomenal and a repeat of that sees him salute for the punters without a worry. Just needs to stay out of trouble from barrier (2).

Best Roughie: #10 In Her Time ($21)

Forgotten horse in the mix. She’s a quality mare that can be forgiven for the last start sixth in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) behind Sunlight when only 2.45 beaten. She won the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) before that first-up after her Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic second to Santa Ana Lane. Flies fresh (8:5-0-1) and is first-up here. Two lead-up trials have her fit and ready to fire at huge odds.
