2019 The Everest Betting Update: Favourites Draw Good Gates

The top three horses in The Everest 2019 betting for this Saturday in Sydney all drew ideally with inside barriers for the world’s richest turf race.

There has been little change to the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for the $14 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on the weekend following Tuesday night’s spectacular barrier draw for the weight-for-age feature projected onto the pillars of Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Anthony Freedman’s top-rated sprinter, five-time Group 1 hero Santa Ana Lane remains favourite at $4.60 in updated The Everest odds after an ideal barrier two draw.

To be ridden by Mark Zahra, the Lope De Vega seven-year-old presents fit second-up after an eye-catching run with 60kg in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 5.

That was the TJ Smith Stakes champion’s first run back in Australia off a Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint (1200m) fourth in Hong Kong and he looks ready to peak this weekend chasing atonement after his unplaced The Everest effort on a Heavy track 12 months ago.

Occupying the second line of The Everest betting at $5 is the Chris Waller-trained Arcadia Queen drawn one wider in barrier three.

James McDonald partners the flying Pierro four-year-old as she chases her seventh win from eight career starts.

The Perth-bred and owned mare hit the big time in WA last December with her 4.5 length Group 1 Kingston Town Stakes (1800m) success as a filly and is also second-up in The Everest field.

Her Sydney debut on September 14 at Rosehill produced a nearly two length win in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and she has been kept fit with a subsequent winning barrier trial at the start of the month.

Whether Arcadia Queen will be as effective over 1200m in a field full of sprint starts remains to be seen, but the bookies are taking no chances with the early The Everest market mover.

Drawn the inside alley and the other big danger in the markets at $6 is then the Gregory Hickman-trained Pierata.

“Where did we draw at the Magic Millions when running for the big money? Barrier one. It is the same here, which is a good omen,” Hickman said post-barrier draw.

“The horse is well and ready to go.”

Tommy Berry continues associations with this valuable stud prospect, the five-year-old Pierro stallion coming off a win in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) defeating fellow The Everest horses Classique Legend (2nd) and Redzel (3rd).

Two years ago, Redzel completed The Shorts – The Everest double winning the inaugural edition of the latter before returning in 2018 to successfully defend his The Everest title.

This year the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained legend returns looking for an historic The Everest three-peat from barrier seven with Kerrin McEvoy aboard once again.

He won from barrier four in 2017 and one in 2018 so is drawn his widest yet.

After his third consecutive win in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) first-up, Redzel was last seen crossing under a length third behind Pierata in The Shorts.

Currently Redzel’s The Everest odds are $11 and co-trainer Paul Snowden is confident the horse is where he needs to be ahead of Saturday’s test.

“We have him where we want him going on how he has been in the past two years. You just have to look at him to see that he is in perfect shape,” he told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“There was no real pressure the first year because we didn’t know what to expect and won.

“The second year, there was a little pressure, we went there hoping and won. This year there is none because he has done it before. What will be will be.”
