2019 Caulfield Cup Winner: Mer De Glace for Japan

Japanese raider Mer De Glace was far too strong for the local stayers in the Caulfield Cup 2019 results continuing his winning streak with a powerhouse win over Vow And Declare (2nd) and Mirage Dancer (3rd) in the $5 million classic.

Prepared by Hisashi Shimizu, famous for training seven-time Group 1 winning Japanese star Kitasan Black, Rulership five-year-old Mer De Glace remained undefeated for 2019 taking out the Group 1 Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (2400m) on debut down under.

The gun stallion made it six straight wins in the Caulfield Cup, posting his first turf triumph over further than 2200m easily accounting for a capacity field over the mile and a half.

Jockey Damian Lane celebrated his first major in Melbourne over the spring guiding the Caulfield Cup winner Mer De Glace to victory having previously ridden the stayer to back-to-back wins in Japan in Group 3 company over 2000m earlier in the year.

Mer De Glace went down as the sixth international Caulfield Cup winner over the race’s long history and the second for Japan following the success of the ill-fated Admire Rakti (2014).

Overcoming a wide barrier 17 of 18 barrier, Mer De Glace ($8) had a length to spare on the line over the Danny O’Brien-trained Vow And Declare ($8) who came with a nice late run but just couldn’t catch the winner.

In third to finish off the Caulfield Cup trifecta in 2019 was the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Frankel entire Mirage Dancer ($16), the import having his first run in Australia on the back of a Group 3 Glorious Stakes (2412m) second at Goodwood in early August.

Lane had Mer De Glace settled second last in the run as the eleventh-hour inclusion in the field, Wolfe, led the Caulfield Cup horses around.

It was a tightly packed affair around the turn for home, but Mer De Glace gave the good kick to run down and go past leader on the straight Finche and hold off the challenge from Vow And Declare in a superior staying performance.

Having saved energy getting back and staying out of trouble, Mer De Glace really let down in impressive fashion showing an excellent turn of foot to keep the wins coming.

“He’s not much to look at but he’s just a tradesman,” Lane said of the Caufield Cup winner.

“He just keeps turning up and winning. Not many horses win five on the bounce in Japan.

“I’m just so wrapped he’s done the job for everyone today.

“I just begged them [connections] to come because I knew 55 [kilos] was still a winnable weight.

“I’m just forever grateful that they brought him out here.”

Caulfield Cup winners have a poor record backing-up in the world’s richest handicap, the Group 1 $8 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) held at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.

That hasn’t stopped the all-in Melbourne Cup odds on Mer De Glace being slashed in from $31 to $9 with the horse now second favourite for the November 5 showdown.

Updated Melbourne Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is now led by the Lindsay Park-trained ex-European Constantinople who was far from disgraced running just 1.4 lengths back fourth as the beaten $6.50 favourite in the Caulfield Cup results.

Constantinople firmed from $12 into $8 in the Melbourne Cup odds, while the Caulfield Cup runner-up Vow And Declare was tightened in from $17 to $10.

Mirage Dancer meanwhile is in from $51 to $21 to take out the Melbourne Cup in 2019.

Under two lengths separated the first six past the post in the official Caulfield Cup 2019 finishing order with the other best in betting, the Chris Waller-trained Finche, running fifth just ahead of the Kris Lees-trained Mustajeer (6th).
