2018 Doomben Cup Tips & Odds Update

The Doomben Cup 2018 takes centre stage in Brisbane on Saturday, our insider tips and updated odds on the latest Group 1 in the sunshine state found below.

There are a dozen weight-for-age hopefuls still in the mix for this year’s Group 1 $650,000 Doomben Cup (2000m), betting at Ladbrokes.com.au dominated by Mick Price’s Hollindale Stakes winner Oregon’s Day.

The mare has been backed in from $5.50 to $4 in the Doomben Cup odds after her gun barrier two draw and is out to do the double last completed by another mare, Streama (2014).

Her lead-up win at the Gold Coast suggested she will run out the 2000m no worries and the favourite certainly ticks plenty of boxes.

The dangers in Doomben Cup betting this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival include the Japanese import Ambitious ($4.60), the Chris Waller-trained Santo Rasen ($5.50) also formerly raced in Japan and another of Waller’s six runners Comin’ Through ($9.50) out to prove himself a genuine 2000m horse.

Earlier we published a comprehensive Doomben Cup 2018 Form Guide & Betting Preview, our below tips based on the facts and stats uncovered there.

Our 2018 Doomben Cup Trifecta Tip is #8 Life Less Ordinary from #10 Tradesman and #4 Tom Melbourne

1st

#8 Life Less Ordinary ($11)

Going for a bit of value and tipping Waller, who saddles-up 50% of the horses in the Doomben Cup field, to win the race for a third time with the in-form Life Less Ordinary. This six-year-old was emphatic last time out in the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup winning the 2000m black-type on May 4 by over four lengths. This is tougher but he’s got great form at the distance (7:1-3-2) ahead of his Doomben debut. Is drawn wide, but that should suit and barrier 11 has actually produced four winners since 1983. Six-year-olds also have a strong recent record in the race. Might not have the same class as some of these, but it’s an open Group 1 and he’s a good chance at a price.

2nd

#10 Tradesman ($13)

There could be value galore to had in Doomben Cup tipping this season and like the stats around the Darren Weir-trained Victorian raider Tradesman. Another in-form six-year-old coming off a lead-up win. He saluted in a handicap with 59kg at Warrnambool by three lengths. Obviously up notably in grade here, but is undefeated at the 2000m and this former WA galloper was third in the 2016 Perth Cup so can run a mighty race on his day. Weir is on fire and this horse can race better than the odds suggest.

3rd

#4 Tom Melbourne ($10)

Another Waller runner, this perennial placegetter can finish in the money yet again. Last year’s winning hoop Corey Brown rides the multiple Group 1 performer who comes off a lead-up second in the Hollindale Stakes. That race has produced six of the past 10 Doomben Cup winners and he’s another horse with good 2000m form (7:2-1-0) that could be hard to hold out late if he learns how to win.
