Diamond Made has earned herself a place in the Australian Oaks field after scoring a surprise win in the Group 3 $200,000 TAB Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick today.
In an amazing effort, the Bruce Cross trained filly was able to turn around a last start fourteenth of fourteen, beaten almost thirty-one lengths, in a 2000m Kembla Grange Maiden two weeks ago into a one length win at Group 3 level.
Cross will now see how Diamond Made recovers from today’s win but is keen to back her up next Saturday in the Group 1 $1m James Boags Premium Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on day two of ‘The Championships’.
“We might be here next Saturday,” Cross said.
“Good trainers take two or three days to make their up so we will give it a go.”
Diamond Made ($41) set the pace at Kembla Grange but today’s winning jockey Glyn Schofield let the Duke Of Marmalade filly settle near the tail of the field and she was able to finish off the 2000m strongly, recording a one length win over the $3.90 favourite Alaskan Rose.
Tommy Berry had Zasorceress ($21) dictating the race from the front and the Jason Warren trained filly looked home before fading slightly in the final fifty metres to finish third.
Cross said that Diamond Made hasn’t had the best of luck from her previous six starts, but it looked like things definitely went her way today.
“We have had a lot of luck with this filly but up to until today it has been all bad,” Cross said.
“So it is nice to turn the corner.”
“From day one she sort had a trip written all over her but you have to prove it before you can tell anyone, But we are very happy today.”
