Experiencing huge support from punters in the hours leading up to the sprint event at Rosehill Gardens, Entirely Platinum has justified clear favouritism to win the Canterbury Hurlstone RSL Handicap (1400m) this afternoon.
Jumping from the gates well, Entirely Platinum settled in prime position on the heels of early pace-setter Greatwood, who dictated only a fair pace over the back straight and round the bending.
Upping the tempo upon reaching the Rosehill straight, the Pentire gelding comfortably broke clear from the pack 300m from home, maintaining a strong enough sprint to finish ahead of Mighty Lucky and Greatwood; a fast-finishing Hooked running on to claim a credible fourth.
Co-trainer Michael Hawkes was pleased with Entirely Platinum’s first-up performance this afternoon, but conceded there is sufficient room for improvement ahead of a Spring Racing Carnival likely to be geared towards the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 4th.
“He had to come out and do it, and he’s done it,” Hawkes said immediately after the Canterbury Hurlstone RSL Handicap.
“He didn’t go overly hard, he over-raced a bit and he did a couple of things wrong but James didn’t panic on him and the last thing I said to him going out was just ride him.
“He’s in for a long spring, he won and he won good and that’s all he had to do.”
Securing a seventh career victory in the Canterbury Hurlstone RSL Handicap, Entirely Platinum has improved his record in claiming at least a minor place in 11 of 14 competitive starts.
Yet to be confirmed for a path on the way to the 2014 Epsom Handicap, Entirely Platinum is currently featured as a $21 chance to win the October 4th feature; sharing the sixth line of betting with possible opponents Criterion and Silent Achiever at leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
