The betting markets for Wednesday’s $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield have opened this afternoon at bookies across the country with More Strawberries the hot favourite to win.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained More Strawberries is currently paying $3.70 at leading online bookie [sportsbet], already having shortened from her original quote of $4.20 as the punters get behind the classy More Than Ready filly.
More Strawberries has been in flying form this spring most recently running a gallant second in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick and has drawn ideally with barrier three for Wednesday.
On Wednesday More Strawberries will be making her Melbourne race debut at the notoriously tricky Caulfield track, but there is plenty of love for her following the success of her star stablemate More Joyous on Saturday winning the Toorak Handicap in her Caulfield debut.
There are three other fillies are at single-figure odds to win the Thousand Guineas in the markets open at Sportsbet.
Second favourite is Sistine Angel paying $5.50, the Andrew Noblet-trained daughter of Testa Rossa coming off some impressive form in Melbourne this season but has suffered a slight blow drawing wide with barrier 11.
Sistine Angel claimed her maiden victory in the McNeil Stakes in August, finished second to Divorces in the Thousand Guineas Prelude and then took out the Edward Manifold Stakes last start at Flemington and could cause an upset on Wednesday.
Meanwhile Peter Snowden’s Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Divorces is at $7 looking to improve from her last start failure in the Edward Manifold finishing 11th , followed by $9 chance Brazilian Pulse.
The other filly that has already had some big bets put on her to win Wednesday’s showdown is Jesse’s Girl, shortening in from $26 to $21 and looking a real chance to cause an upset.
The 2010 Thousand Guineas is scheduled as Race 6 at Caulfield on Wednesday, due to jump at 3:40pm (AEDST).
