World Group 1 Record Beckons Winx in George Ryder Stakes 2018

She secured the Australian Group 1 winning record first-up and now on Saturday champion mare Winx will make it a world record with a 17th elite level flat racing success in the 2018 George Ryder Stakes in Sydney.

The Chris Waller-trained daughter of Street Cry continues to defy the history books and is now after her incredible 24th win on the trot heading to Rosehill Gardens on Golden Slipper Day in the Group 1 $1 million George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

Winx won the George Ryder Stakes in both 2016 and 2017 and now gets a chance to make it a three-peat in the weight-for-age autumn clash for the first time since the race’s inauguration in 1903.

The other big record Winx is chasing is that 17th Group 1 win.

She currently co-holds the record of 16 Group 1s on the flat win the American star John Henry.

This weekend gives her the chance to surpass that and all looks to be going swimmingly for the six-year-old who had her final hard gallop at Rosehill on Saturday with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.

McEvoy was aboard in the place of Hugh Bowman, Winx’s regular rider still needing to pass a final fitness check after his fall from Waller’s Golden Slipper hope Performer in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on March 10.

Bowman, who suffered a concussion but miraculously no other major injuries from the fall, has his final cognitive test on Monday morning.

There have been no such autumn slip-ups for Winx whose first-up win on March 3 saw her thrash her rivals by a seven length winning margin in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).

Fitter for the run, a trial really for the $15.9 million earner, Winx understandably dominates pre-field George Ryder Stakes odds at $1.10 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

“It was this race last year where she ran her peak rating and I would think everything points to her going just as well going into the race this year,” Waller told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“She has had the perfect preparation and her gallop on Saturday was perfect. It is a worry going from 1600m to 1500m but she has done that before.

“I feel she is ready to run near a peak performance and she will have to against a pretty good field.”

Possible Winx rivals in the George Ryder Stakes field include the three-year-old Randwick Guineas winner Kementari and Pat Webster’s seven-year-old Canterbury Stakes champ last start Happy Clapper.

Waller has also confirmed the stable will make a post-race announcement within 48 hours of the George Ryder Stakes as to whether or not Winx will head to England for the Royal Ascot carnival this June.
