Champion mare Winx is one of six Chris Waller trained horses among the nominations for the 2018 Group 1 $600,000 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Waller’s other entries among the thirteen nominations for the weight for age Chipping Norton Stakes are Comin’ Through, Endless Drama, Libran, McCreery and Who Shot Thebarman.
Winx was originally scheduled to make her Autumn Carnival debut in the Group 2 $250,000 The Star Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on February 17 but when regular rider Hugh Bowman was unavailable to ride her due to a careless riding suspension, Waller put pack the champion mare’s reappearance by two weeks.
Instead the three times Cox Plate winner went around in a specially convened 1200m barrier trial against five of her stablemates in between races at Randwick on Apollo Stakes Race Day.
Winx won the trial handsomely and Waller said he has her fit enough to tackle the 1600m of the Chipping Norton Stakes first up as she chases her third straight win in the weight for the age race as well as her twenty-third win on the trot.
“The trial has brought her on and she is ready to go to the Chipping Norton,” Waller told AAP.
“She has had a very good week since then and we couldn’t be happier.”
Irish import Endless Drama broke through for his initial win on Australian soil when he beat Global Glamour and stablemate Comin’ Through in the Apollo Stakes while Libran, McCreery and Who Shot Thebarman will be stepping out for the first time this Autumn.
Winx will be having her first run back since making history during the 2017 Melbourne Spring Carnival by scoring a third consecutive win in the Group 1 $3m Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley which equalled Kingston Town’s long standing record of three straight Cox Plate wins and took her winning sequence to twenty-two.
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have nominated their handy five year old Stampede, Gary Moore has entered the well performed Classic Uniform and John O’Shea is represented by French import Berdibek.
Newcastle trained Kris Lees has nominated Prized Icon for the Chipping Norton and the 2016 Victoria Derby winner is coming off a last start fourth in the Apollo Stakes while front running mare Lasqueti Spirit will be first up if trainer Lee Curtis decides to take on the might of Winx and the Waller stable.
The remainder of the nominations are made up of the restricted class gallopers Vinland and Jemadar.
Nominations for the 2018 Chipping Norton Stakes have been extended until 11am on Tuesday, February 27 and the final acceptances will be taken at 9am on Wednesday February 28.
