White Moss Chases Hawkesbury Crown & Tatt’s Tiara 2018

A Crown – Tiara double this campaign is on the cards for the Jason Coyle-trained White Moss who runs second-up on Hawkesbury Gold Cup Day this Saturday.

The consistent four-year-old daughter of Mossman is one of a capacity field of fillies and mares taking to the Hawkesbury track in Race 6 for the Group 3 $175,000 Godolphin Crown (1300m).

Drawn well in barrier eight with Jason Collett jumping back aboard for the first time since the spring, the grey comes off an eye-catching first-up run at Randwick behind Quilista in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1400m) from April 14.

She goes up from 55kg to 58kg on Saturday in the Hawkesbury Crown, but remains one of the best in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.80 to win and trailing only the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Sedanzer ($3.90).

White Moss chases her first win since the Group 3 The Nivison (1200m) at Randwick last October and her sixth overall at career start number 11.

Coyle is also confident in his mare improving off her campaign kick-off as she is undefeated second-up (2:2-0-0) heading into Saturday’s Group 3.

“There’s always that query of second-up runs but generally she races quite well first and second-up,” the Warwick Farm-based horseman told Racing NSW.

“She’s offered nothing to me to say she’s a little bit flat, we didn’t do anything with her the week after the run and she has been very strong in her work since.

“Touch wood everything is in order and she can run as well as she did first-up.

“Last preparation she’d only had the one trial and was able to win first-up in lesser grade, this time we gave her two which had her forward enough to perform well.

“She was always going to take benefit from that run.

“She puts herself where she wants to be, she’s adaptable and Jason [Collett] has ridden her before. Let her find where she wants to travel and she will put in through the line.”

Still lightly-raced and with plenty of upside, she is tracking towards a Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival bid targeting a grand final run in the Group 1 $500,000 Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) at Doomben on June 23.

Leading-up to the Group 1 in Brisbane, Coyle is still unsure of where to place White Moss with the mare likely to miss the Group 3 $200,000 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone on May 12 that stablemate Siren’s Fury runs in.

Myboycharlie four-year-old Siren’s Fury is on the cusp of gaining a start in the Hawkesbury Crown on Saturday.

The first emergency Alliterate is already in for the scratched Danish Twist and Siren’s Fury remains the only other spare for the sprint.

“It’s a really strong Godolphin Crown, ideally I want her second-up at Scone if we can jag a start,” Coyle said.

“If we did secure a start [on Saturday] we’ll look at it but I want to get a bit of prizemoney and up the benchmark [by running in the Blakes Marine Handicap instead] if I can because at the moment we’re probably borderline being balloted again.

“Her racing pattern encourages a lot more luck than other horses and if she gets that she should run well.”
