Surround Stakes Next For 2018 Light Fingers Stakes Winner Alizee

Godolphin’s Flight Stakes winning filly Alizee returned for the autumn in tremendous fashion and will head towards the country’s newest Group 1 race, the Surround Stakes, after saluting for the punters in the Light Fingers Stakes 2018.

The well-bred daughter of Sepoy took her career record up to four wins from 10 starts, impressive late thanks to a gun ride by her regular hoop Glyn Schofield first-up in the Group 2 $200,000 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.

Earlier in the week trainer James Cummings said the stable were putting no pressure on the filly to win the 1200m sprint first-up, saying that the best would be to come later in the autumn with Alizee getting out over more distance.

Proving her versatility and maturity, the gun bay showed she could sprint well fresh and put in the ideal Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival kick-off to win the race Global Glamour saluted in last year after her Flight Stakes success the spring prior.

“She’s a darling filly for us and a Group 1 winning filly for us in the spring,” Cummings said post-win on Saturday.

“She’s not the easiest horse to manage, she’s taken a lot of energy.

“To produce like that first up with plenty of improvement to come…she has a big preparation ahead.

“She returned a winner of a prestigious race at Group 2 level and we can be very satisfied.”

Alizee had her first start since mid-October when the team went around once more with their Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) winner, heading south to Melbourne for a shot at the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Running third as the beaten favourite that day behind Aloisia, who finished a credible fifth only two lengths off the upset winner Rimraam in Melbourne’s Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) on Saturday, Alizee was back in winning form in her Sydney return.

Schofield never panicked on his mount despite getting caught midfield in the run as the Light Fingers Stakes field was led around by From Within.

The front-runner was quickly tackled on the home straight, while Schofield had to duck back towards the inside onto the poorest part of the track.

Once there, Alizee sprinted up very quickly and hit the front with the untapped Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Shumookh challenging.

Alizee found something extra late and held off the lightly-raced Shumookh for the win, while the Clarry Conners-trained Not A Single Doubt filly Torvill ran out of her skin to finish third as a $101 roughie despite having black-type winning form at the track form October.

Also terrific first-up in a very encouraging return was the now Edward O’Rourke-trained Golden Slipper runner-up Frolic in fourth making up good late ground to round out the first four in her first run since last April’s ‘The Championships’.

Alizee posted the fastest 1200m of the day taking out the race in a sharp 1:10.06, including a final 600m sectional time of 35.98 seconds.

“She’s returned stronger and she’s got more to offer,” Cummings beamed.

“There’s a Group 1 in a fortnight.”

That is the recently upgraded Group 1 $500,000 Surround Stakes (1400m) back at Randwick on March 3, with a shot at the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic (1500m) a fortnight later at Rosehill to follow.
