Three-time Group 1 winner Sunlight will line up in this year’s $14 million Everest race at Royal Randwick on October 19, occupying the fourth slot alongside Santa Ana Lane, Pierata and Classique Legend.
Tony McEvoy’s three-year-old earned her keep over the Spring winning the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) before going on to win the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and the William Reid Stakes (1200m) earlier in March.
The filly by Zoustar will run under Max Whitby’s slot in the world’s richest turf race and has plenty of experience against the likes of Santa Ana Lane after running third behind the highest rated sprinter in last months TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).
McEvoy, who has now earned over $4.3 million with Sunlight, was understandably happy with the news.
‘’It’s really exciting for me to have a runner in The Everest and for the ownership group to have these guys that are steeped in racing and it’s a real endorsement for the filly,’’ McEvoy told Racing.com.
‘’Now we can step back and work as hard as we can to make sure she gets there in the best shape we can.’’
Sunlight has been installed as a $7.00 chance for The Everest with Ladbrokes behind Santa Ana Lane and Godolphin’s Osborne Bulls.
McEvoy went on to say Sunlight, who has been spelled following last month’s successful 1000m jump out at Gawler, will be back in action very soon.
‘’She’ll be back in work in one week,’’ McEvoy said.
‘’I haven’t planned which route we’ll take yet but we’ll start working on that pretty soon.’’
