Silent Sedition Set for 2018 Coolmore Classic Shot

A second shot at the Coolmore Classic in 2018 is on the autumn agenda for Andrew Noblet’s class mare Silent Sedition.

Last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival the Melbourne-trained daughter of War Chant had to settle for second in a devastatingly close finish with Heavens Above in the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic (1500m).

Noblet is hoping his five-year-old can go one better 12 months on with Silent Sedition again being aimed at the Rosehill Gardens showdown on March 17.

A million dollar earner, the mare is best known for her own elite level success when taking out the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley a fortnight after her Coolmore Classic second last season.

She would also go on that campaign to finish fourth when just over a length beaten by the winner Foxplay in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) over the Randwick mile during ‘The Championships’.

Silent Sedition was last seen flopping in her final spring run at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival when finishing a distant 14th to Shoals on VRC Derby Day in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).

Plans are to have the mare run third-up in the Group 1 and Noblet has tentatively scheduled her resuming run for February 10, the same day stablemate Super Cash resumes in Caulfield’s Group 2 $200,000 Rubiton Stakes (1100m).

“She’ll start off in Melbourne, two runs here, then off to the Coolmore third-up,” Noblet told Racing Victoria.

“She always seems better in herself in the autumn.

“I don’t know what it is in the spring, but she doesn’t come up as good in herself and her coat, but she looks 100 per cent.”

“Trialled OK [on Tuesday], had a good blow after, so she’s got a fair bit to do, but that’s OK, we’ve got a fair way to go with her.”

Another likely Coolmore Classic-bound mare this autumn is the Richard Laming-trained Payroll.

The Not A Single Doubt five-year-old was last seen winning the Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day.

The five-year-old has had just the one Group 1 run over her 23 start career to date when ninth in the 2015 Thousand Guineas, but Laming is looking to change that this coming autumn.

Payroll was forced to withdraw from her Gold Coast Magic Millions Day bid on race morning, but could now be aimed at a Coolmore Classic run fresh in Sydney.

“It was very disappointing to be fair. She got up there [the Gold Coast] in terrific condition, had her final gallop on the Tuesday, and then Thursday, she cow-kicked herself, kicked her back hock kicking at flies, it blew up a bit and she wasn’t able to run,” Laming explained.

“She’ll have a couple of weeks off, we’ll freshen her up, get her right, she’s had a week on antibiotics to settle it right down.

“Once she’s back sound and we’re happy with her, she’ll go back into light work.

“Depending which way we go, we’ve got a few options, but we might go to Sydney for the Coolmore, the mares’ race first-up over the mile [1500m], and then maybe back to Brisbane for the Doomben Cup before she comes back for the spring.”

The Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) is scheduled for May 18.
