Redzel To Beat Winx in Sydney Trial on Monday

The world’s best mare Winx will be on show under the public eye for the first time since her third Cox Plate success when given an easy trial against The Everest winner Redzel at Rosehill Gardens on Monday.

In the morning’s star-studded opening heat, the Group & Listed Trial on the course proper over 900m will pit ace Peter & Paul Snowden-trained sprinter Redzel against the country’s highest ever earning racehorse Winx in a mouth-watering clash.

Also engaged in the heat, which jumps at 8:15am (AEDT), are David Payne’s Victoria Derby champion Ace High and Gerald Ryan’s upset Golden Rose winner Trapeze Artist.

Chris Waller’s Street Cry mare Winx was last seen joining Kingston Town (1980-82) with her third Group 1 $3 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) win at Moonee Valley on October 28.

Snitzel five-year-old Redzel meanwhile backed-up from winning the inaugural edition of Australia’s richest race, the Restricted $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Randwick, to salute down the Flemington straight on November 11 in the Group 1 $1 million Darley Classic (1200m).

The Rosehill trial on Monday serves as a pre-return warm-up for 15-time Group 1 winner Winx, but she won’t be there to break any records according to part-owner Peter Tighe.

“Winx won’t be there to really do anything in her trial on Monday, she will just have a spin around,” Tighe told Racenet from Dubai.

Tighe and other connections of $15.6 million earner Winx are Ascot-bound in England this weekend having been invited to meet with British racing officials.

They will be discussing the option of taking Winx to this year’s Royal Ascot carnival where she would race in front of the Queen in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes (1600m) in June.

Tighe was firm however that the best interest of Winx would always come first and that the mighty mare would only head overseas if she was 100% sound following her autumn racing campaign.

“We are not entertaining any approaches from anyone at the moment, we’ve certainly had invites from the Poms, just like we had invites from Japan and Hong Kong,” Tighe said.

“We are going to Ascot on Saturday to have a look at the races but it is really a waste of time anyone over here trying to get us to lock Winx in [to Royal Ascot] at this stage.”

Winx is also nominated for the Longines World’s Beat Racehorse award and the bulk of her ownership team will be in London next Tuesday for the announcement.

Winx will shoot for her 23rd win on the trot first-up at Royal Randwick in the Group 2 $250,000 Apollo Stakes (1400m), a race she has won the past two years running.

“Winx is on track for her comeback in the Apollo Stakes and maybe after that we will be in a better position to start thinking about some other plans,” Tighe added.

“In the meantime, I and the other owners are keen to get to Ascot on Saturday.

“We were invited to Ascot on this Saturday last year as well but the races were cancelled because the track was frozen over.”

A similar campaign to last autumn will then follow for Winx after the Apollo, including a Grand Final title defence in the Group 1 $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) during ‘The Championships’ on April 14.

No surprises Winx is already the $1.40 odds-on favourite in pre-field Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2018 betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.

As for Redzel, the super sprinter will resume at Flemington on February 17 in the Group 1 $750,000 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m).

He too is ‘The Championships’-bound with a shot at the Group 1 $2.5 million TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 7 calling.

Redzel is the early $5 favourite in TJ Smith Stakes 2018 betting ahead of the race’s three-time defending champion Chautauqua ($9).
