The first race of the esteemed three-year-old Australian Triple Crown, the Randwick Guineas is a Group One event that takes place in March during the annual Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The race is held at the Royal Randwick racecourse and is conducted by the Australian Jockey Club (AJC).
The three-year-old entries must run a distance of 1600m under set weight conditions when competing for the $550 000 purse the Randwick Guineas has on offer. The winner of the Randwick Guineas is exempt from ballot for the AJC Australian Derby, which is the final leg of the Triple Crown series, and the Doncaster Handicap.
The event attracts the best sprinters and gallopers from across the nation and its inclusion in the Triple Crown establishes it as one of the premier three-year-old races in Australia.
A good lead-up race to the Randwick Guineas is the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) a weeknight before.
Entries in the Randwick Guineas may go on to compete in events including the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m), the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) and of course the other two legs in the Triple Crown, the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and the AJC Australian Derby (2400m).
