The Kosciuszko

$2 million The Kosciuszko race is a Special Conditions feature for NSW country-trained horses only held on the lucrative The Everest Day card at Randwick in October.

2023 The Kosciuszko Results

  • 1st: #1 Front Page
  • 2nd: #7 Opal Ridge
  • 3rd: #3 Far Too Easy

The Kosciuszko is one of the recent additions to the Sydney Spring Racing Calendar, the Special Conditions feature held on The Everest Day at Royal Randwick each October.

Contested for the first time in 2018, The Kosciuszko race is open only to NSW or ACT Country-trained horses and is the most lucrative of its kind offering $2 million in prize money as of 2022.

Taking place in Sydney on the same day Melbourne hosts the Caulfield Guineas in 2023, The Kosciuszko is a set weights plus penalties event that is now a hugely popular target for the provincially-trained sprints from around the state.

Members of the public are able to purchase tickets in The Kosciuszko Sweep that gives them a chance to select an eligible horse to take part in the event, the field size for which increased from 12 to 14 in 2019.

Winning ticket holders from the subsequent The Kosciuszko Calcutta Draw, which harks back to the traditions of bush racing, then have the opportunity to part-own a horse in the race that is selected at random.

The 2023 The Kosciuszko took place at Randwick on Saturday October 14, 2023 as the key support act to the $20 million The Everest and saw the Matthew Dale-trained Front Page ($5.50) successfully defend his title with an all-the-way victory.

2023 The Kosciuszko Tips

Stay tuned for our insider The Kosciuszko 2023 Tips on the lucrative country-horse only showdown on The Everest Day.

  • To Win: #12 Derry Grove ($7 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Plenty of live wire chances in this year’s The Kosciuszko but think the airborne Derry Grove up in grade is the value here to keep the wins coming. Matthew Dunn’s Star Turn five-year-old is proving to be one classy chestnut and chases win number four on the trot in Saturday’s $2 million acid test. He comes off back-to-back sprint wins over shorter distances here at the Randwick track to give him an unbeaten record at the course. He is yet to win over further than 1100m, however his recent form suggests the six furlongs will be a non-issue. Last start saw him cart 61kg to an over one-length win at 1000m, while the run prior he was enormous putting nearly five lengths on his closest rival over 1100m here with 59.5kg. Jockey Nash Rawiller is riding in freakishly good form this season and retains the ride on this up-and-comer who will relish racing with 55.5kg.

The Kosciuszko History

The Kosciuszko was first run in 2018 and won by Belflyer who failed in his attempt at back-to-back wins, in the way super sprinter Redzel (2017, 2018) won the opening two editions of The Everest, finishing dead last (14th) in his title defense behind Handle The Truth in 2019.

In 2020 It’s Me saluted for the punters as the $2 favourite in The Kosciuszko results, as did the well-backed Art Cadeau ($4) in 2021.

The Kosciuszko prize money was increased to $2 million ahead of the 2022 edition.

In 2022 and 2023 Front Page went back-to-back to become the first dual The Kosciuszko winner.
