The 2016 Northwood Plume Stakes is a Group 3 sprint held at Caulfield Racecourse.

Due to sponsorship arrangements, the race is currently named the Sportingbet Sprint Series Final and constitutes the third leg in the Sportingbet Sprint Series, after the Group 3 How Now Stakes and the Group 3 Cockram Stakes.

Raced over 1200m, the Sportingbet Sprint Series Final is a challenging contest between some of the best mares on the circuit. The race is held under set weights plus penalties conditions, which tends to ensure the stronger and more experienced mares run better. Only mares aged four years and older are allowed to compete.

Worth $150,000, the race also offers a bonus $50,000 to the winner if they previously took out one of the heats.

The Sportingbet Sprint Series Final is held on the first day of the Caulfield Cup Carnival, Caulfield Guineas Day. There is a massive 10 black-type events on the race program, including the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, Group 1 Caulfield Stakes, Group 1 Toorak Handicap, Group 1 Thousand Guineas, Group 2 Schillaci Stakes, Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes, Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes and two listed events.

Those mares which typically target the Sportingbet Sprint Series Final do so following successful runs in previous similar races. The How Now Stakes and the Cockram Stakes are the obvious lead-up events, while the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes acts as another potential warmup.

Following a decent run in the Sportingbet Sprint Series Final, mares tend to step things up and target more prestigious events. The Group 2 Tristarc Stakes, while longer in distance, is often considered the next viable target for top performing mares.

The 2016 Sportingbet Sprint Series Final will be run on October 8th.
