Ravi scores first up win in Sheraco Stakes

A dominant first up win by Ravi in the Group 3 $125,000 Irresistible Pools Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill today has given trainer Peter Snowden plenty of options for the mare for the rest of the Spring Carnival. Snowden, who trains with his son Paul, is not certain where Ravi will have her next Spring…

The 2017 Sheraco Stakes is a 1200m Group 3 sprinting event held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse during September.

With total prize money of $150,000, the Sheraco Stakes is a nice Sydney Spring Racing Carnival kick-off for sprinting fillies and mares, and is usually targeted by most major Sydney trainers. Open only to fillies and mares and run under set weights with penalties conditions, this is a great race for form guide to follow into later spring features.

Some of the better three-year-old fillies in the Sheraco Stakes might choose to step up in class and distance and contend the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) or The Shorts (1100m) at Randwick a week later. The Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) and Group 2 Tramway Handicap (1400m) held at Randwick a week earlier are good preparatory races.

The best mares out of the Sheraco Stakes results each spring could eventually end up in Melbourne on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington running in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) over the mile, a race the 2014 Sheraco Stakes winner Catkins ran third Bonaria in. Catkins also returned and went back-to-back winning the 2016 Sheraco Stakes.

The 2017 Sheraco Stakes was held on September 9th, 2017.

2017 Sheraco Stakes Nominations

The 2017 Sheraco Stakes nominations are released by Racing NSW on the Monday leading-up to the race.

Sheraco Stakes History

The Sheraco Stakes is named after the winner of the 1982 Australian Oaks and all-round successful filly Sheraco.

Patou took out the inaugural edition of the Sheraco Stakes in 1998. Since then, a number of impressive horses have filled out the Sheraco Stakes each year, making this a race always worth punting on. Following only two years in existence, the quality of the field and the need for another black-type race for fillies and mares ensured that the Sheraco Stakes was quickly upgraded to listed status (in 2000). In 2013, the Sheraco Stakes was again upgraded and is now a Group 3 event.

Initially run over 1100m, with the upgrade to Group 3 came an increase in distance to 1200m. The Sheraco Stakes has also been known by the sponsored name “Winning Edge Presentation Stakes”.

Notable Sheraco Stakes winners include Nanny Maroon (2001), Mimi Lebrock (2008), More Joyous (2010, 12) and Driefontein (2013). Sheraco Stakes results since 2000 are below.
