The NE Manion Cup* is a Group 3 race run at Rosehill Gardens on Golden Slipper Day each March during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
*Note: In 2022 the NE Manion Cup ran as the Group 3 Queen’s Cup
Contested over 2400m the race is a quality handicap event for stayers offering $250,000 in prize money and serves as a good lead-up to the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) over the two miles at Randwick in April. The Offer (2014) was the last stayer to complete the NE Manion Cup – Sydney Cup double.
Golden Slipper Stakes Day is one of the biggest of the season and is host to five Group 1 races including the $4.92 million Golden Slipper (1200m) for two-year-olds, as well as a number of Group 3 support acts.
A key lead-up to the NE Manion Cup each autumn is the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) run in early March on Randwick Guineas Day.
Many gallopers in the NE Manion Cup field go on to run in the Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’ and possibly the Sydney Cup the following Saturday. Libran (2016) followed by Big Duke (2017 on protest) were the last horses to complete the NE Manion Cup – Chairman’s Handicap double.
Libran went on to run second in the Sydney Cup results that autumn behind Gallante, who came off a third in the NE Manion Cup results, while Big Duke backed-up from his double to run third in the 2017 Sydney Cup trifecta. Big Duke also returned for a third in the 2019 NE Manion Cup results.
In 2020 UK raider Young Rascal won the NE Manion Cup and the stable returned in 2021 with trainer William Haggas saluting again with Favorite Moon.
Haggas added to his excellent NE Manion Cup record in 2024 taking it out with another well-backed international, Post Impressionist.
The 2022 NE Manion Cup form was franked with the winner No Compromise returning in the spring to take out the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m).
The NE Manion Cup 2024 ran on Saturday March 23, 2024 at Rosehill Gardens as a key Sydney Cup lead-up and was won by the William Haggas-trained raider Post Impressionist ($3.90F).

Stay tuned for our insider NE Manion Cup 2024 Tips on the Sydney Cup lead-up this Slipper Day in Sydney.
- To Win: #11 Floating ($8 at time of publish) – BET NOW
The presence of an international runner adds intrigue to the NE Manion Cup, but the consistent form of Floating at a tempting price makes him a horse to watch. Trained by Matthew Smith, the Puissance De Lune gelding has a strong record at Rosehill, finishing runner-up twice in three attempts. He’s currently on a hot streak, winning two of his last three starts. While stepping up in class and distance (from a Benchmark 88 at Randwick with a heavier weight), Floating’s recent form suggests he can be competitive in this open race.

NE Manion Cup History
The NE Manion Cup, named in honour of the former Sydney Turf Club (STC) director N.E. Manion, was first run back in 1972 and won by Odyssey. Since then plenty of good stayers have won the Sydney showdown including Manner Hill (2002), Permit (2012 & 2015), and The Offer (2014).
The race ran as a Group 3 from 1979 – 2005, but was downgraded to Listed class during 2006 – 2013. It has been back to the Group 3 race list since 2014 and after starting out as a 2000m event has run over the current 2400m distance since 1979.
In 2021 the original Golden Slipper Stakes race day including the NE Manion Cup was abandoned due to heavy rainfall and unsafe track conditions and postponed to the following Saturday.
In 2022 the race ran as the Group 3 Queen’s Cup and saw trainer Chris Waller prepare the trifecta.
