The Sapphire Stakes is a quality Group 2 thoroughbred race held towards the tail end of the esteemed Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival on Australian Derby Day in April. Conducted at the prestigious Royal Randwick Racecourse, there are four other fantastic Group races at the meeting; the Group 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m), Group 1 Galaxy (1100m), Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) and Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m).
The Sapphire Stakes is a 1200m sprint open to fillies are mares. Run under set weight plus penalty conditions, it is worth $175 000 in prizemoney. The race usually attracts above average runners that may have previously run in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) two weeks before or in some of the carnival?s more prestigious and challenging female races like the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Classic (1500m) or Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m).

The Sapphire Stakes 2012 will be run on Saturday April 14th, 2012.

Sapphire Stakes History:

First run in 1998 the inaugural Sapphire Stakes was won by What Can I Say. It began as a Listed race run over 1200m. The event gained Group 3 status in 2002 and not long after reached its current Group 2 status in 2006.
