2017 Blazer Stakes Winner Now Or Later onto Myer Classic

Robert Smerdon’s progressive import Now Or Later has raced her way into Myer Classic contention this Melbourne Cup Carnival after a nice win at Flemington Racecourse on Turnbull Stakes Day in the Blazer Stakes 2017. Having just her fourth start in Australia, the former Irish-raced Bushranger mare jumped double-figures in Saturday’s Group 2 $200,000 Blazer…

The Blazer Stakes is a 1400m set weights and penalties race run at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse in early October.

Previously called the Rose Of Kingston Stakes, the Group 2 Blazer Stakes is run during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and is worth $200,000 in prize money. The race takes place on Turnbull Stakes Day, the line-up for which also includes the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m), Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m), Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2500m).

Open only to mares aged four-years-old and above, the Blazer Stakes attracts a quality line-up each season with many of the runners heading towards the following month’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) back at the track over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

This year the Blazer Stakes 2017 took place on Saturday October 7, 2017.

2017 Blazer Stakes Tips

  • 1st: #2 French Emotion
  • 2nd: #1 Prompt Response
  • 3rd: #9 Missrock

Happy to take the blowout price on the Chris Waller-trained French Emotion first-up. The six-year-old flies fresh and resumes here at a track / distance she’s won over before. Fifth in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) in the winter was good at the same odds and she won this race last year before going on to run second at 40/1 odds in the Myer Classic behind I Am A Star two runs later. Prompt Response gives the weight away, but this four-year-old daughter of Beneteau is classy and just over a half-length beaten in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) first-up at Caulfield. Fitter for the run, back at Flemington where she’s run second in both her previous starts and the Tattersall’s Tiara second in Brisbane should stack-up again. Missrock is the narrow favourite and gets the run of the race from the barrier (5), four runs in now and getting ready to peak. The Goodwood runner-up in May behind Vega Magic and that form has been franked this season, plus the How Now Stakes fourth was brave after a nasty run from the wide alley.

2017 Blazer Stakes Field

The Blazer Stakes field usually attracts some very well experienced mares out of lead-up races including the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) or Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) the month before. In 2017 Now Or Later improved on a lead-up sixth in the How Now Stakes for her win at double-figures in Blazer Stakes betting.

The Blazer Stakes field and barrier draw will be released by Racing Victoria on the Wednesday of race week and will be listed in full below once out.

The 2017 Blazer Stakes Final Field features a capacity 16 starters plus three emergencies for the mares’ only feature. Prompt Response is drawn a treat in gate four second-up for the Tulloch Lodge stable looking to improve on a close fifth when only a half-length beaten in the How Now Stakes, while Merriest has a wide alley to overcome on the back of a Caulfield win from September 23.
