First won by Amiable in 1939, the Alister Clark Stakes was a Principal race up until 1977. The race was named after the foundation chairman of the Moonee Valley Racing Club and master of Oaklands Hunt Club from 1901 to 1908, Mr Alister Clark.
The CS Hayes Stakes and Alister Clark Stakes double has been recently achieved by Lieutenant in 2005. Sometime has won the race twice in 1963-64 as has Family Man in 1977 and 1979.
