Palestine was the inaugural winner of the Crown Oaks when it was first run in 1861. The event began as a principal race run over 12 furlongs and remained the same for over a century until Australia adopted the metric system and converted the race distance to 2400m in 1972. The following year the length was increased to 2500m and it reached Group 1 status not long after in 1979.
