With experienced rider Damian Browne aboard, the $17 chance was positioned outsider leader Driefontein who set a hot pace up front.

In the straight the Commands colt produced an outstanding effort to tackle Driefontein and hold off a bold finish from favourite Sizzling who snatched runner-up honours.

“I said to the owners, they thought I was a bit silly, I said he’ll nearly win this race,” McLachlan said.

McLachlan has aimed the emerging galloper at the race all preparation and was clearly thrilled to have seen it all come to fruition in front of a bumper crowd at the Gold Coast.

“They were all rating the other horses and my horse never got a look in but you watch his last few runs he had no luck and he’s a good horse, he just proved that,” McLachlan said.

“He came across, sat outside the leader and still won.”

Browne has ridden Saluter in his past five starts and always suspected he had the ability to win a big race provided he got the breaks at the right time.

“He’s raced without much luck right through this campaign,” Browne said.

“He’s just a 110 per cent racehorse. He gives everything he’s got.

“Full credit to Jason, he set this horse for this race a long time ago.”

It was a gutsy effort from Sizzling to run second after jumping from a wide barrier and getting caught up half way through the race.

Magic Millions Guineas 2013 – Results

Sizzling is one of three horses jostling for Magic Millions Guineas Favouritism

The top three elects are all jostling for favouritism at bookmaker.com.au, with Queensland colt Sizzling ($4.50) a slight favourite ahead of No Looking Back ($4.60) and Driefontein ($5.50).

Winter Carnival star Sizzling is the undisputed best three-year-old in Queensland but showed a chink in his armour last start when he was beaten on the line in the Vo Rogue Plate.

Both are coming out of the Vo Rogue Plate where Lucky Hussler scored the biggest win of his career to hold off Sizzling and Hezajetsetter produced an impressive run to take third despite being caught wide for much of the race.

#3 Craiglea Falcon ($8.50) from #1 Eagle Falls ($3) and #6 Leealan ($8.50)

Happy to take the market mover Craiglea Falcon from Gympie who gets their chance at the big time here at seven-years-old, think they have something up there sleeve dropping back to the 1000m. Eagle Falls is a former Group 1 winner boasting plenty of class and runs well first-up while track specialist Leealan will be speedy on the short course.

#6 I’m Cool ($2.80) from #1 G’day Old Mate and #3 Carmine King ($6)

Sticking with the favourite I’m Cool here who gets the run of the race from barrier one, the Brisbane galloper having won four of their five starts to date including their first-up effort at Doomben last month. G’day Old Mate should also have a nice run one wider in two but needs to carry the 59kg top-weight as the Toowoomba visitor looks to improve on their two close minor placings in town. Sydney raider Carmine King also has claims coming off a good New Year’s Day win at Rosehill carrying 58.5kg, drop to 56kg here.

Lucky Hussler is drawn wide but has the class to overcome the gate in Saturday's 2013 Magic Millions Guineas

One of a capacity field of three-year-olds engaged in this year’s $1 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) the local Kent Fleming-trained Husson colt certainly has a few major advantages heading into the clash.

The most notable of those is their last start victory, their third win from four starts this spring – summer campaign, when narrowly holding off Group 1 winner Sizzling in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) at Doomben on December 29 a race that is considered the traditional MM Guineas lead-up.

While the run from Sizzling was an unlucky one and the Kelso Wood-trained champ was only a short half head off Lucky Hussler on the line, it was still an impressive effort from the winner and a form line that has credentials.

Last year Gold Coast galloper Punch On secured the Vo Rogue Plate – Magic Millions 3YO Guineas double and Lucky Hussler will look to emulate that feat this weekend.

“Winning the Vo Rogue proved he’s up to this level and, if anything, he’s taken a step forward in his trackwork and attitude since that race,” Palmer, 26, said.

“He’s still a young horse who’s developing and learning but he did everything right at Doomben and was good enough to beat Sizzling.”

For the Vo Rogue the consistent Lucky Hussler jumped from barrier 4 (of 10) and carried 57kg.

For the Guineas the youngster has drawn a horror gate (17) and will have more weight (58kg) but neither fact seems to have dented Palmer’s confidence especially considering every MM Guineas winner since Gold Edition in 2007 has jumped from barrier 10 or wider.

“He’ll come into 13 if the emergencies don’t run which isn’t such a bad result and you get a good run down the back straight from the 1400-metre start,” Palmer said.

“I know the track well, I know the horse well so I’ll be looking to give him an easy run somewhere just off the speed.”

While no horse has carried more than 56.5kg to victory in the MM Guineas Palmer believes Lucky Hussler has the class to set a new weight carrying record.

“Lucky Hussler is a plum ride to land and definitely my best chance to win one of the big Millions races,” the injury-prone hoop said.

The punters aren’t quite as sure as Palmer however with Lucky Hussler looking a little over the odds at $15 based on their draw.

Markets on the $1 million feature are really starting to heat up with Brisbane-based Group 1 champ Sizzling now the $4.60 favourite in the latest Magic Millions Guineas odds.

The Kelso Wood-trained Snitzel colt, beaten in a shock loss last start by fellow Guineas hopeful Lucky Hussler in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m), was originally the clear favourite for Saturday.

After a disastrous barrier 20 draw however their odds went out to $4.50.

While that price has eased again, the odds on their closest rivals in the markets have drifted even more allowing Sizzling to regain his spot at the top.

Second pick remains the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fastnet Rock filly Driefontein, protest winner of the Magic Millions Classic here 12 months ago.

Originally the co $4.50 favourite with Sizzling for the weekend after her delightful gate three draw, Driefontein is now out to $4.80 to atone for her last start defeat by She’s A Stalker when the beaten odds on favourite in the Wyong Magic Millions Classic on December 20.

The big market mover for the MM Guineas however has been another Waterhouse-trained filly, No Looking Back, who is in from $8 to $5.

The daughter of Redoute’s Choice was first past the post in the MM Classic 12 months ago but was regulated to second after the successful protest of her stablemate.

She is looking fitter than ever now however after a gutsy first-up win in the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on January 1, her first appearance in nine months.

The punters are getting on the back of this form and are coming for No Looking Back who is drawn in gate five with Blake Shinn booked for the ride.

Shinn however may miss the mount after he fainted in the stewards’ room shortly after riding Cathay Lady to victory in Thursday’s Listed Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Gosford.

“He’s stood down from tomorrow (Friday) night (at Canterbury) pending a medical assessment,” Racing NSW deputy chief steward Greg Rudolph said on Thursday.

“We’ll be progressing with that tomorrow.

“We’ll determine his engagements for Saturday but it’s doubtful he’ll be riding Saturday and Queensland stewards will be advised this evening.”

While No Looking Back is the genuine market mover the big drifter in the Guineas odds is Sizzling’s last-start conqueror Lucky Hussler, the Kent Fleming-trained local Husson colt looking for another upset after their Vo Rogue Plate success as an $11 outsider.

The only other hopeful now under $10 in the markets is then Robert Heathcote’s consistent Jet Spur gelding Heza Jetsetter at $9 who comes off an eye-catching third to Lucky Hussler in the Vo Rogue.

The $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m), scheduled as Race 5 at 2:45pm, will be the first time Shinn partners with Gai Waterhouse’s classy Redoute’s Choice filly who was first past the post in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on this day 12 months ago.

No Looking Back, then ridden by Nash Rawiller, was downgraded to second however after a successful protest from stablemate Driefontein and their hoop Tommy Berry.

Both fillies return to the glitter strip for the MM Guineas on Saturday, Shinn happy to be aboard the longer priced of the two in the markets as he looks to continue his career resurrection after spending the bulk of 2011 on the sidelines after being disqualified for a betting scandal.

“It’s been pretty tough, but I’ve gritted my teeth and knuckled down,” 2008 Melbourne Cup winning jockey Shinn, 25, said of the past 12 months.

“It’s been going great.

“I’ve gradually built it back up and owners and trainers are starting to really support and get behind me now and things couldn’t be going any better.

“To win a big race at this point in time of my career would certainly put me right back on the map.”

If successful Shinn would owe a lot to Waterhouse, who he previously won a Sydney jockey premiership off an association with, as she has been full of advice and support recently.

“Obviously I was stable rider a couple of years ago and since I’ve come back she’s been very supportive,” he said of Waterhouse.

“She has given me a great opportunity here, which is fantastic. I’m looking forward to getting out there and giving it our best shot.”

A winner of two of her five starts to date No Looking Back resumed off a lengthy nine month break to make her three-year-old debut with a narrow win over Zaratone in the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on New Year’s Day.

Driefontein is the big market mover in the 2013 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas odds for Saturday

The daughter of Fastnet Rock enjoyed a big win on Magic Millions Day 12 months ago taking out the $2 million 2YO Classic on protest and is now well fancied to be back in the Magic Millions winners’ stall on Saturday.

Defeated first-up by She’s A Stalker in a shock loss as the odds-on favourite in the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes in Sydney, Driefontein was originally the second pick in the markets for the $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions Guineas (1400m).

After the early favourite Sizzling drew disastrously wide with barrier 20 (of 21 including five emergencies) however the punters have started to come for Waterhouse’s filly who is now the $4.50 co-favourite with Kelso Wood’s Group 1 winning colt in the Magic Millions Guineas odds.

Driefontein will again be ridden by Tommy Berry at the Gold Coast as she looks to secure her first race win since the Listed Widden Stakes (1100m) at Warwick Farm back in February last year.

Following the top two fancies there are just three other three-year-olds at single figure odds in the Magic Millions Guineas betting markets with:

Other notable hopefuls at more generous prices that could prove the value bet of Magic Millions Race Day 2013 then include Wyong Magic Millions Stakes winner She’s A Stalker ($11) who gets the inside run from barrier one, Sunshine Coast galloper Saluter ($13) who was third to Sizzling in the Gold Edition Plate last month, and Grahame Begg’s impressive last start Sydney winner Bennetta who is at a short $13 despite being the fifth emergency and highly unlikely to gain a start.
