Joining a prestigious list of star juveniles, Gai Waterhouse’s speedy filly Overreach has won the 2013 Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon in a dominant display to hand her trainer with her incredible fifth win in the world’s richest two-year-olds’ race.

Overreach gives Gai Waterhouse her fifth Golden Slipper win. Picture: Steve Hart

The Exceed And Excel filly had been installed at the top of the markets for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) since betting on the final field opened thanks to her two emphatic Sydney wins this time in.

After a six length Widden Stakes success Overreach backed up to easily defeat former Golden Slipper favourite Villa Verde, five lengths away seventh today, in the Reisling Stakes and completed an autumn hat-trick with her classy Golden Slipper victory.

It was back-to-back Slipper trophies for Waterhouse too after Sydney’s leading lady of racing saluted in the classic last year with Pierro.

While the trainer was no stranger to the Slipper scene it was a first for young jockey Tommy Berry who enjoyed the biggest win of his career, the 21-year-old in tears after the emotional victory which was his fourth in Group 1 company.

“She’s put a lot of trust into me and so have the owners,” Berry said speaking about his ‘mother-figure’ Waterhouse.

“I’m so lucky to be in this position.

“I never thought this would happen to me especially this early.”

Waterhouse had three runners in the race and also scored third with her Silver Slipper Stakes winning filly Sweet Idea ($10) finishing just behind Peter Snowden’s brave runner-up Sidestep ($11) also by the winning sire Exceed And Excel.

Overreach ($2.80F) was away from her advantageous barrier one draw well and settled into second just off roughie runner Kuroshio who set the pace, Sweet Idea in third.

With 300m to go in the day’s marquee event Overreach turned it on and raced away from the rails where a very cool and collected Berry had her positioned having faith that it wouldn’t be too chopped up, and she was able to sprint to the front.

“I asked Gai before the race ‘can I stick to the fence’? Berry said speaking tactics.

“And she said ‘you do what you want as long as you win’”.

A rank above her rivals, the easing favourite showed off her blistering turn of foot pulling well clear of the rest of the Golden Slipper field in a single stride to put the result beyond doubt and blow away her competition in an impressive effort to win by nearly two lengths.

“She showed her superiority,” Waterhouse said.

“She flew from the gates, and Tommy, cool as a cucumber!

“We talked about the track long and hard before the race and he said “if I put her right up on the fence I think I’ve got a chance’.

“I didn’t commit him to this filly for a longest time, and he didn’t say boo.

“He’s not only a great jockey but he’s got a lovely ability to flow with things, that’s the people that are the most successful in things I believe.”

It was also an excellent Golden Slipper result 2013 for owner George Altomonte who also bred the winner.

“It’s just tremendous. I’ve bred her, I own her, I’ve bred a winner,” he said.

“It’s nice to have this one.”

Altomonte was also full of post-race praise for the up-and-coming Berry.

“I think it’s a real crossroads in his career, getting this race will really set him off and he’s very deserving of it he’s a great man,” he said.

This year the best Golden Slipper odds were available online through bookmaker.com.au – the country’s premier online betting agency offering punters the hottest autumn betting markets.

With the wet weather in Sydney playing havoc to the track conditions at Rosehill Gardens for Golden Slipper Day 2013 the team at Races.com.au have gone over the form and pedigree of the 16 promising two-year-olds in the mix for the day’s marquee event, the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), to uncover where the value is at in the mud!

Sweet Idea is capable of a 2013 Golden Slipper upset in the wet. Photo: Steve Hart.

Running as Rosehill Race 7 at 4:00pm (AEST) the 2013 Golden Slipper is the richest race of its kind in the world and there are now three single-figure fancies in the bookmaker.com.au markets for the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival classic.

Originally the talented Gai Waterhouse-trained filly Overreach was nearing odds-on territory in the Golden Slipper odds at an opening quote of $2.15 having won both of her lead-up runs by big margins in Sydney including the Group 2 Reisling Stakes at the track and distance last time out.

She may have the class and speed but with the current Slow (7) track, the chance of more rain before Slipper time and the fact she has drawn the inside alley where it is likely to be very choppy by then her price is easing.

Overreach is now right out to $3 in the Golden Slipper markets and the punters are coming for her stablemate Sweet Idea.

Due to be ridden by former Golden Slipper winning jockey Jim Cassidy (Ha Ha, 2001), has been well-backed as the Snitzel filly won the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) – the same race that produced last year’s champion Pierro – last start on a Heavy (9) track.

The other horse now under $10 is then the Peter Snowden-trained Sidestep ($9) who comes off a victory in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) and who should handle the wet track as their mother Dextrous is by Quest For Fame who is a noted sire of mudlarks.

The Exceed And Excel colt is also a three-quarter brother to two wet track winners in Skilled and Ambidexter further enhancing their claims for today.

So are these three really the ones to get behind in your Golden Slipper wet track bets? Or is their value to be found with some of the double-figure chances with some sneaky mud stats in their background?

Best Golden Slipper Wet Track Tips

#13 Sweet Idea ($8)

Punters are already clued onto Sweet Idea as she is the big market mover right into $8 after being as long as $14 earlier in the week

Drawn just off the rails in barrier four so should be able to avoid the chop

Former Golden Slipper winning jockey Jim Cassidy brings experience

Only starter in the race with a wet track win on her record when taking out the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) here last month on a Heavy (9)

Silver Slipper Stakes also won by her stablemate Pierro ahead of his Slipper success last autumn

Breeding further improves her claims as Sweet Idea’s sire Snitzel has had 68 wet track winners from 346 starters giving them a nice strike rate of 16.8%

#1 Criterion ($11)

Another market mover getting a bit of love as the dark skies grow over Rosehill

David Payne’s Sebring colt comes off a Group 2 Todman Stakes win at the track and distance and won the Black Opal in Canberra before that

Their sire Sebring won the Golden Slipper on a Heavy track in 2008

Also related to Varenna Miss and Silently who were both notable wet track winners

His dam Mica’s Pride is by Bite The Bullet who sired many good mudlarks

#8 Charlie Boy ($26)

Adds nice value to the Golden Slipper exotics

Will be able to stay out of trouble in their wide gate 12 starting position

Ran third in the Silver Slipper Stakes in the mud behind Sweet Idea beaten 2.5 lengths and finished off better than a number of other Slipper hopefuls there including the fourth-placed I’m All The Talk who is at a shorter price of $19 for today

Also fourth last time out in the Todman behind Criterion which was a credible performance

Their sire Myboycharlie has hand one wet tracker winner from four starters

To lock in these Slipper hopefuls, or any others you fancy for the win, at the best prices visit our No. 1 recommended bookie bookmaker.com.au who are offering the best odds on all the Rosehill races today.

As predicted by officials on Friday, the track rating for 2013 Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill is a Slow 7.

Sweet Idea has been well backed in the Golden Slipper market. Photo: Steve Hart.

The wet track leaves the majority of Golden Slipper runners heading into unknown territory as they attempt to score top honours in the $3.5 million sprint.

Gai Waterhouse-trained favourite Overreach has been on the drift since the wet weather was predicted and she is now out to $2.70 after being as short as $2.10 at bookmaker.com.au on Wednesday.

The money has continued to pour for Sweet Idea who has shortened to $8.50 from her opening quote of $15.

Also from the stable of four-time winning trainer Waterhouse, Sweet Idea is one of the few Slipper contenders proven in the wet.

The daughter of Snitzel toughed out a gritty win in the Silver Slipper on heavy ground last month.

Steady at $9 is Darley colt Sidestep who was the early week market mover. The Peter Snowden-trained galloper is backing up seven days after winning the Pago Pago Stakes and will have blinkers applied for the hit-out.

There has been little movement in the rest of the betting market and Victorian grey Villa Verde remains a $12 chance.

The Shaun Dwyer-trained filly was considered the best chance of upsetting Overreach before finishing 4 1/2 lengths behind her in the Moet and Chandon Stakes.

Also expected to thrive in the soft ground is New Zealand filly Ruud Awakening ($13) but she will have to overcome her outside barrier position.

Despite the bogged track, no Golden Slipper runners have withdrawn from the field, meaning emergencies Havana and Il Cavallo have been scratched.

Il Cavallo won the $35,000 Swettenham Stud Handicap by four lengths, however, it was not enough to score him a start in the 2013 Golden Slipper field.

The Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes is the only other Group 1 of the day to have received a scratching, with Royal Descent being withdrawn from the field.

This Saturday Rosehill Gardens Racecourse will host one of the year’s most crucial race meetings – Golden Slipper Day 2013– and with five big Group 1 features including the iconic Golden Slipper for two-year-olds on the card there’s a huge program to bet on and enjoy.

Sangster to win the 2013 The BMW is our roughie pick of Golden Slipper Day.

To give our readers a little autumn carnival boost and loot the bookies’ bank below we have our Best Golden Slipper Day Bets – who you should jump on and where we think the bookies have got it wrong!

In The Big One – Race 7

#11 Overreach ($2.60)

Whatever you think of two-year-old races there’s no denying the hype on the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) – the richest of its kind in the world. And while the rain has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works with the clear fancy easing right out to $2.60 now, it is still hard to see Gai Waterhouse’s flying filly Overreach get beaten. She’s got the ideal lead-up form with two easy Sydney wins, the last over this track and distance, and she will get a gun run from gate one with Tommy Berry aboard. Lots to like, she’s adaptable and got speed. She just needs to handle the ground and reproduce her recent efforts and she’s got this in the bag.

Best Place Bet – Race 8

#9 Solzhenitsyn ($13)

One of five Group 1’s on the card the $400,000 Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) is definitely spruik colt Pierro’s for the taking, the young champ odds-on at $1.60. But to add value to your exotics in this weight-for-age classic we like the look of double-figure chance Solzhenitsyn from Brisbane who is a tough galloper with previous Group 1 winning experience. Third to Pierro in the Canterbury last start having fought hard from a bad position and the distance is ideal for this mile specialist.

Better Than Bank Interest – Race 6

#1 More Joyous ($1.50)

The odds on Gai Waterhouse’s glamour mare More Joyous to win the $400,000 Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) continue to ease with the money coming hard and fast for Chris Waller’s recognised mudlark Red Tracer who is right into $6.50 now. But $1.50 is still odds-on and that’s for a reason with the dual defending champ the class horse here, More Joyous having won eight previous Group 1’s including the past two editions of this race with improvement to come off her good first-up second to Pierro in the Canterbury.

Best Roughie Of The Day – Race 5

#8 Sangster ($15)

The second biggest race of the meeting, the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) is shaping up as a cracker this year with three-year-old Fiveandahalfstar ($3.20) favourite to break their string of second placings with a Group 1 win against the older stayers. We are tipping an upset in the staying showdown however and have Kiwi raider Sangster, winner of the Auckland Cup two back, rated special to win. They will have big improvement after their Ranvet seventh which saw them come from 3200m to 2000m, will relish the mile and a half and thrive if the track stays Heavy.

In A Tight Market – Race 3

#3 Philippi $4.80

Two three-year-olds battle for favourtism in the markets for the $175,000 Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) with the Peter Snowden-trained Proverb the $4 favourite over Philippi at $4.80. The two are drawn beside each other in gates three and four respectively and the bookies are having a hard time separating the duo. While Proverb drops back from a Group 1 sixth in the Randwick Guineas it is the second elect Philippi we fancy for the win, Michael Kent’s Host colt to be ridden by ace jockey Luke Nolen coming off a good second over 2040m in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Lay Of The Day – Race 9

#15 Aeronautical ($4)

It’s a fairly open field for the last on the card – the $125,000 Group 3 Sebring HKJC Stakes (1200m) but it is Aeronautical winning the battle at a quote of $4. While they were competitive against a far better field when third in the Newmarket two back they are too hit and miss for us and we are taking this one on. Far prefer to take Each Way odds on market mover Skytrain ($7.50) who has won two of their last three runs including the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes on a Heavy (10) last time out in February – even with their wide draw (12).

Get behind our Golden Slipper Day selections online now at bookmaker.com.au and check out their exclusive Pick Your Own Odds markets on all the Rosehill races to really boost your winnings!

He may be on the least spruiked of Gai Waterhouse’s three 2013 Golden Slipper (1200m) runners but top Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller hasn’t given up hope of scoring his second consecutive second win in the glamour race.

Nash Rawiller will ride Whittington in the Golden Slipper. Photo: Steve Hart.

Rawiller partnered champion colt Pierro to victory last year and believes he is again on a horse that can “run a race.”

Whittington is a $20 chance in the Golden Slipper market , a long way from the $2.50 of stablemate Overreach, but his form has still been impressive.

Rawiller is tipping the colt to improve off his half-length Lonhro Plate victory which came on the back of a first-up second in the Listed Canonbury Stakes.

”He wasn’t quite ready first-up this time but he made good improvement from that run to the second-up run and has improved again since,” Rawiller told Fairfax.

”He has not done that much wrong.”

In Whittington’s other outing he won the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate on debut in October.

Whittington forms part of a massive book of rides for Rawiller who has two near certainties with Pierro in the 2013 George Ryder Stakes and More Joyous in the 2013 Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

Pierro is a $1.60 chance to add a fifth Group 1 to his resume and claim a third straight victory after winning the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes and the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes to begin his campaign.

More Joyous is shooting for a third consecutive Queen Of The Turf win and was a strong second to Pierro in the Canterbury Stakes first-up.

Rawiller also rides former Magic Millions winner Driefontein in the 2013 Vinery Stud Stakes and Melbourne Cup fourth Kelinni in the BMW.

The $3.5 million Group 1 Tooheys New Golden Slipper (1200m) is scheduled to run as Rosehill Race 7 at 4:00pm (AEST) on Saturday and features a full field of 16 starters plus two emergencies.

Golden Slipper betting is dominated by Gai Waterhouse’s top filly Overreach after her third win on the trot following emphatic wins in the Widden Stakes and Reisling Stakes this time in.

With the track entering the Heavy range however the price on Overreach to hand Waterhouse her fifth Golden Slipper trophy has eased out and the filly now pays a more attractive $2.50 through bookmaker.com.au.

The only other single-figure fancy is then Peter Snowden’s Pago Pago Stakes winner Sidestep ($9).

Following closer is then the genuine Golden Slipper betting market mover Sweet Idea, stablemate to Overreach and one of three Waterhouse-trained chances in the mix, who has been slashed into $10 and firming.

Sweet Idea comes off a Silver Slipper Stakes win at the track in the wet and as the only Heavy track winner in the field has plenty of admirers.

But the track isn’t the only thing to consider when it comes to making your Golden Slipper selections and placing those Golden Slipper bets.

Whether you’re a form junkie or a superstitious punter below you will find the must know Golden Slipper Facts & Hoodoos on everything from the barriers to the names of the runners.

Golden Slipper Barriers

Best: Barrier 1 has produced eight winners the most recent being Pierro last year; this year Pierro’s stablemate and the race favourite #11 Overreach ($2.50) jump from the gun gate

Worst: No Golden Slipper winner has ever jumped from barrier 13; this year the hoodoo gate belongs to #5 I’m All The Talk ($21) but if the two emergencies come out it will be #6 Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($21) looking to be the first from 13

Overdue: Barrier 9 hasn’t produced a winner since Sweet Embrace in 1967 which is the longest losing sequence of any gate making it statistically overdue; #15 Guelph ($26) has drawn nine but it will be #6 Whittington ($20) who jumps from it if emergencies come out

Golden Slipper Wet Track

Best: #13 Sweet Idea ($10) is the only horse in the field to win on a Heavy track in the Silver Slipper last time out, she’s also bred to handle the mud as her sire Snitzel has had 68 wet track winners – 16.8% of his total prodigy to have run on the ground

Worst: #10 Windjammer’s sire Bernardini has produced just one wet track winner from 40 starters and their dam Ekali had four stakes winners down under none of which had any luck in the mud

Golden Slipper Breeding

Best: #11 Overreach is the shortest priced of the six Golden Slipper starters this year who has a Darley Stallion as a sire and Darley stallions have produced the last two winners; #13 Sweet Idea is then the shortest priced of five hopes coming via the Magic Millions Gold Coast sales which have produced eight of the past 14 Golden Slipper champions

Worst: The last Golden Slipper winner with a Coolmore Stud stallion as a sire was Ha Ha (Danehill) back in 2001; this year three will look to break that hoodoo with #2 Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($21), #6 Whittington ($20) and second emergency #18 Il Cavallo ($16)

Golden Slipper Lead-Up Race

Best: The most successful lead-up race in the past 30 years has been the Skyline Stakes with seven winners in that time; this year’s Skyline Stakes winner was #5 I’m All The Talk ($21)

Worst: #14 Villa Verde ($12) is the only confirmed starter that has had just the one run this time in and if successful would be the first two-year-old in over three decades to win the race off one lead-up

Golden Slipper Saddlecloths

Best: #1 has produced 11 winners and this year #1 Criterion ($13) will look to be the 12th

Worst: Saddlecloths #14 and #17 are yet to produce a Golden Slipper winner; this year they belong to #14 Villa Verde ($12) and first emergency #17 Havana ($101)

Golden Slipper Boys v Girls

Best: Colts have won 27 times and this year the best fancied is #4 Sidestep ($9)

Worst: Geldings have produced the least number of Golden Slipper winners; there are no geldings in the race this year

Golden Slipper Names

Best: Horses whose names start with the letter ‘S’ have won the Golden Slipper nine times; this year there are two top chances that fit this with #4 Sidestep ($9) and #13 Sweet Idea ($10)

Worst: No Golden Slipper Winner has had a four-word name ruling out #5 I’m All The Talk ($21) this year

Have a clearer picture of the horses to back and sack this Golden Slipper?

2013 Golden Slipper favourite Overreach may be on the drift but jockey Tommy Berry believes there is nothing to worry about heading into the $3.5 million sprint at Rosehill.

Overreach jockey Tommy Berry is not concerned by a predicted wet Golden Slipper.
Overreach is now at $2.50 after being as short as $2.10 on Wednesday as money comes for her stablemate and proven wet-track performer Sweet Idea ($15-$10).

But Berry, who has ridden the Gai Waterhouse-trained filly to two convincing lead-up wins, remains unconcerned at the prospect of his mount being tested in wet ground.

“Gai, she doesn’t hesitate working the horses at Randwick if the track’s wet so she’s done a bit of work on soft tracks,” Berry told Sky Sports Radio.

“She’s by Exceed and Excel who handled the wet.”

Berry is confident he is aboard the best two-year-old in the country and described her inside barrier position as “perfect.”

“We’ve drawn a perfect barrier for the day and she’s a filly with plenty of speed, she should be able to put herself into a good spot,” he said.

Berry is searching for his first Golden Slipper win after partnering Overreach to a six-length win in the Widden Stakes and a 4 1/2 length romp in the Moet and Chandon.

Many have suggest the inside barrier could be Overreach’s downfall but like Pierro last year, her trainer thinks it is a positive.

“This could be the same this year. The quickest way to the winning post is along the rails,” Waterhouse said.

Second favourite in the Slipper is Sidestep ($9) who is backing up just seven days after winning the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes.

Keen on Overreach in the Slipper? Don’t like her short price? Increase that with the bookmaker.com.au “pick your own odds” feature.

With four Golden Slipper titles to her name, Gai Waterhouse is undeniably one of the best trainers of two-year-olds in the country.

Overreach is one of three Gai Waterhouse-trained chances in the Golden Slipper. Photo: Steve Hart.

She sits in equal second spot of all-time Slipper wins with Clarry Conners, Lee Freedman and the legendary Bart Cummings.

Only her father, the great TJ Smith (6), has trained more.

Waterhouse is gunning for back-to-back titles in the 2013 Golden Slipper after champion colt Pierro saluted last year and she has three chances representing her.

So can the high profile Sydney trainer again claim the $3.5 million sprint? Keep reading as we run over the form of each of her Slipper contenders.

#11 Overreach $2.50

A deserving short-priced favourite. This Exceed and Excel filly has produced incredible lead-up form, winning the Widden Stakes by six lengths and the Moet and Chandon Stakes by 4 1/2.

Has drawn barrier one, the same barrier Pierro came from last year, and has shown an ability to ping from the barriers and dictate from the front.

The wet track provides a slight query as she hasn’t raced on worse than dead but jockey Tommy Berry is confident she can handle the ground after riding her in trackwork.

#13 Sweet Idea $10

One of the few horses in the race who have proven they can run in the wet. Won the Silver Slipper on a heavy 9 and the money has come accordingly.

Backed into $10 after opening at $15 and has proven herself a quality galloper. Was second in the Magic Millions prior to the Silver Slipper and is yet to miss a place from five starts.

Jim Cassidy, who won the Slipper for Waterhouse on Ha Ha in 2001, stays aboard.

#6 Whittington $20

The forgotten Waterhouse runner and her only colt in the field. A winner of two of three starts, is coming off a strong Lonhro Plate win.

Is partnered by Nash Rawiller who won the race on Pierro last year and knows how to get the job done on the biggest stage.

Like a Waterhouse runner? Fancy another horse? Whoever you like in the Golden Slipper, great odds can be found at bookmaker.com.au, home of the $400 bonus bet offer!
