Former jockey Frankie Stockdale has tried his luck at training for some time but hasn’t really come to the party with many quality horses.

Domicile well out from the major training centres in Sale, country Victoria, Stockdale has about 20 horses and most with country ability.

Unique Quality is a little different, yet to win in only three starts, Stockdale shows he has a big opinion of him by starting in the 2011 $502,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes – horse profile

#9 Unique Quality (barrier 9) 56.5kg

Three year old bay gelding

Record: 3 starts 0 wins 1 second 1 third.

Winning distance range nil

Best win: nil

Trainer: Frank Stockdale, Sale

Jockey, Peter Mertens.

Latest price Luxbet $41

It will be a big ask for Unique Quality to beat Sepoy a horse that has won nine of ten starts.

Or others in the 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes that have at Group level, but don’t be surprised if Unique Quality fills a place at big odds.

He has something in common with Sepoy - both horses are by Elusive Quality out of Danehill mares and the two have met in a race.

Unique Quality hasn’t raced in eight weeks but at his latest start finished third to Sepoy beaten 1-3/4 lengths in the Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

On that occasion Unique Quality led and fought on strongly belying his maiden status.

Many better performed horses in the Coolmore Stud Stakes 2011 haven’t finished that close to Sepoy and are much shorter odds.

One expects through race experience and natural progression, Unique Quality could have easily improved since that run in September.

If Unique Quality wins the 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), punters around Australia will be diving for their form guides to see who this horses is.

It is unlikely he will, but if he does it is great story for the little batting trainer from Sale who just might have stumbled on a horse that lives up to his name.

Unique Quality is the value that should be thrown into all exotic bets for the 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Saturday.

Foxwedgeopened his career with two wins as an early two-year-old in the minor league when a short priced favourite and won them easily.

Trainer John O’Shea had the education part intact and then it was a case of what Foxwedge could do in black type races.

The bay colt has continually progressed and now is equal second favourite alongside Hot Snitzel with Luxbet at $11 for the 2011 $502,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.

2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes – horse profile

#4 Foxwedge (barrier 6) 56.5kg

Three year old bay colt

Record: 8 starts 4 wins 1 second 1 third.

Winning distance range 1100m to 1200m

Best win: 2011 Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes 1200m at Randwick

Trainer: John O’Shea, Randwick

Jockey, Nash Rawiller.

Latest price Luxbet $11

Foxwedge was far from disgraced in the better two year old races finishing a midfield seventh in the Golden Slipper Stakes behind Sepoy before being spelled.

But the son of Fastnet Rock and Forest Native definitely improved as a three-year-old.

He was pushing towards the rich Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) and ran a narrow second to the exciting Smart Missile in the lead up Run For The Roses.

On to the Golden Rose and Foxwedge met three very good ones, Manawanui, Smart Missile and Helmet – he didn’t match it with them but by O’Shea’s next move we may have the explanation why.

While those three horses went into races over more ground, Foxwedge went back to 1200m and won his latest start the Roman Consul Stakes when odds on.

He steps up again to Group 1 in this the 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) and meets Australia’s dominate three-year-old sprinter Sepoy.

Foxwedge seems to prefer dry ground and punters may give him an extra tick if he gets one here.

Speedy with quality, Foxwedge should go into multiples in the 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

Can he win the 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes?

Sepoy is at the end of his campaign and that is the hope of all his rivals who have real quality yet are evenly matched – Foxwedge is one of the better ones and you get the feeling he will be an even better four-year-old – A win is not out of the question.

Increase your own chances of winning by betting online with the Tabcorp owned Luxbet.

The big race almost over-shadowing the main event this weekend is the Patinack Classic with two big runners, Black Caviar and Hay List. And Sportsbet are offering an equally exciting bet refund offer for the race. They have creatively called it the “Blacklist Bet”.

Here’s how it works: Back any other horse to win in the Patinack Classic this weekend and if your horse runs 2nd or 3rd to Black Caviar or Hay List you’ll get your money back.

For Emirates Stakes they’ve got another money back promotion if you back any horse for a win and it runs second, they’ll refund your bet.

Kiwi stayer Sterling Prince won the Group 3 $251 500 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, the decisive victory largely increasing his chances of receiving an invitation to the Honk Kong International meeting next month.

It was a good finish at Melbourne for the Wayne Hillis-trained six-year-old after earlier disappointment when the gelding failed to win the Lexus Stakes and earn a start in the Melbourne Cup. Prior to his fifth place finish in the Lexus, Sterling Prince ran a strong third in the Geelong Cup on October 21 behind Leica Ding.

On Saturday Sterling Prince ($18), ridden by the masterful Hugh Bowman, atoned for his fading finish in the Lexus, outstaying his rivals in the 2500m handicap to score a two length victory ahead of Crossthestart ($26) with Naval Escort ($17) a further length back in third.

It was a proud moment for Hillis, as Sterling Prince became the first New Zealand trained galloper to win at the Flemington Carnival. It was also the stayer’s first win over 1600m and his fifth victory from 28 race starts.

A run in next Saturday?s Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m) has mostly been ruled out, with all the focus on $2.2million Hong Kong Vase (2400m) for which they are hoping to get an invite.

Hillis has also been adamant that Sterling Prince will return to Flemington next spring for the Melbourne Cup, vying to follow in the footsteps of the magnificent Makybe Diva, who won the 2002 Queen Elizabeth Stakes prior to her first Melbourne Cup victory in 2003.

On the final day of the illustrious Flemington Spring Carnival, Emirates Stakes Day was host to a range of fantastic races including the Listed $151 000 Hilton Stakes where the Dean Howard-trained It’llbefantastic scored an upset victory.

Ridden by Glen Boss, the lightly raced outsider at $31 defeated Silver Spur ($4.80) and the odds-on favourite Governance ($2.20) in the 1400m Flemington race on Saturday, upstaging two of Australia’s biggest stables Arrowfield and Darley Stud. It was a gallant finish for the Peter Snowden-trained Governance who was held up badly at the top of the straight before weaving a passage through the field on the extreme outside

After the biggest win of his career, Cranbourne trainer Howard is now considering It’llbefantastic, the son of Fantastic Light, for the Sandown Guineas (1600m) next Saturday. The promising three-year-old should have no problem stepping up to the 1600m as his Hilton Stakes victory came off a strong maiden win at Pakenham over 1314m.

The Grahame Begg-trained All Silent, ridden by emerging star hoop Nick Hall, secured a stunning Group 1 victory on Saturday at Flemington in the Patinack Farm Classic.

The six-year-old pulled out a powerful effort to come from last to first in the 1200 metre sprint, setting himself up for a trip overseas next month where the talented gelding will compete in the $1.7million Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin.

Saturday’s nine horse field was an intensely competitive one, All Silent taking on five other Group One winners in the weight-for-age feature. At the 300 metres the Belong To Me gelding was still last of the pack but with only 200m to go All Silent let loose an impressive burst of acceleration in the final sprint. The $3.90 favourite defeated Wanted ($16), ridden by Luke Nolen, by three-quarters of a length with Bank Robber ($12) a further head back in third.

Equal second favourites at $5.50, stablemates Apache Cat and Mic Mac managed to finish fourth and fifth respectively. It was a devastating finish for Nicconi, the equal favourite at $3.90 with the eventual winner; as the runner crossed the line last after pulling a front shoe and coming back lame.

All Silent now boasts four wins from four starts at Flemington, with Hall comparing the horse to the great Takeover Target. Hall was more than impressed by All Silent on Saturday who gave the jockey his second Group One victory following his win onboard 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington in October.

On Thursday Flemington is ready to host another elite day of racing as the end of what has been a spectacular 2009 Spring Carnival draws near.
