The 2011 Crystal Mile shaped as one of the closest events of Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley but in the end it was an absolute domination by a horse who’s form demanded respect.

Testa My Patience won easily last start and again today he proved just how good he is by blazing away from his rivals across the mile trip.

Two weeks in a row now jockey Craig Newitt has landed himself in the prime spot, today it was fourth one out on the back of a pretty hot pace set by Hawks Bay.

It was actually a tremendous run by the Darwin traveller who went straight to the lead and was the only one that looked any danger to Testa My Patience.

As they came off the bend it was Hawks Bay with a clear advantage and then Testa My Patience working three wide with no other horse in the picture.

Half way down the straight Hawks Bay was still hanging on but class showed in the final stages as Testa My Patience strode away to earn an easy win.

There was a decent gap back to Hawks Bay in second with He’s Remarkable running on ok late after turning the widest.

It was the first time Testa My Patience has had blinkers on this prep, a somewhat risky move given he won by over two lengths last start.

“I was just a little bit concerned that he might be a bit tardy out,” trainer Mick Price said.

That wasn’t an issue has he strode out with the top bunch and was allowed to settle just behind the pace.

This has earned him a deserved shot at the top grade in two weeks time.

“He has to go to Flemington in two weeks time in the Emirates Stakes,” he said.

“He gets his Group 1 chance.”

Newitt will be there for that ride too all going to plan and on the back of this performance you wouldn’t want to be on any other horse.

“He really jumped and put himself into a positive spot,” Newitt said.

“(Blinkers were) a good choice by Mick…full credit to him.

“He surprised me, they ran at a good clip from about the 700m.”

Testa My Patience paid $6.00 with Luxbet with the second placed Hawks Bay a massive $16.80 and He’s Remarkable at $1.90.

There will be a few happy first four punters as well with over $17,000 the official Luxbet payout.

You won’t fin that anywhere else as exclusive to Luxbet right now is a 5% bonus on all exotic dividends for selected races of the spring carnival.

That means not only will you guarantee yourself the best tote exotic payout, you’ll get 5% extra which can make a big difference as this race shows.

Get on board and join up at Luxbet now!

Today Moonee Valley Racecourse is host to one of the Melbourne Spring Carnival’s premier meetings – Cox Plate Day 2011 – and here Races.com.au take a look at the latest track report and field scratchings over the nine quality races on the card.

Moonee Valley Track Report

Weather: Overcast

Track Condition: Dead (4)

Penetrometer: 4.54

Rail: True Position Entire Circuit

Previous Rail: Rail Out 7m Entire Circuit (07/10/2011)

Racing kicks off at the Valley this afternoon with the $250,000 Group 1 Inglis Banner (1000m) at 12:35pm (AEDST), but the first Group race of the day is Race 3.

Due to jump at 2:05pm (AEDST), the $150,000 Group 3 1300 Australia Stakes (1200m) looks to be an open affair with a number of genuine chances, but it is Neville Layt’s smart filly #8 Karuta Queen who sits at the top of the Luxbet odds as they step back in class after taking on superstar Black Caviar last-start.

Black Caviar is back at the Valley today as well, Peter Moody’s champion mare vying for career win No. 15 in the $300,000 Group 2 Schweppes Stakes (1200m) at 3:20pm (AEDST).

There is one early scratching from Moonee Valley Race 5 with the withdrawal of #4 Balavan meaning Black Caviar has just three rivals standing between here and victory, explaining her near record-breaking short price of $1.03 in the latest Luxbet odds.

Three horses have come out from the next race on the Cox Plate Day card as well, Race 6 – the $250,000 Group 2 Drake International Cup (2500m) – with #2 Booming, #3 Linton and #12 Lalla Rookh.

Americian leads the Luxbet markets for the Drake International, formerly the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, into $2.90 to win their 2011 Melbourne Cup lead-up.

Of course, the race every punter is waiting for today is the 2011 Cox Plate, the $3 million weight-for-age feature set to jump at 5:35pm (AEDST) this afternoon.

A full field of 14 remain in Cox Plate contention, second emergency #16 Yosei pulling out earlier in the week and first emergency #15 Avienus getting a start after the scratching of #2 Descarado, Gai Waterhouse’s injured galloper in doubt for the remainder of the carnival.

See below for the full 2011 Cox Plate Day scratchings, as well as which horses are currently leading the Luxbet markets in each event.

If you fancy a Moonee Valley exotic bet, such as a Trifecta or First Four, on any race today Luxbet is the bookie for you as they have an exclusive offer offering Best Tote Exotics + 5% Bonuses, with NO cap on your winnings!

See Luxbet for full Terms & Conditions and if you want to join the online betting revolution, make sure you enter the code BONUSBET when making your first deposit to get up to $500 as a bonus bet.

One of the key support races on a crack nine-race Cox Plate Day 2011 program at Moonee Valley this Saturday will be the $200,000 Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) and here the Races.com.au team take a closer look at the form on the 12 gallopers engaged, providing our exclusive Crystal Mile betting tips and selections.

A $500 Bonus Bet for Cox Plate Day is all yours if you join Luxbet today!

Due to jump at 4:40pm (AEDST) as Moonee Valley Race 7, one event before the 2011 Cox Plate takes centre stage, the 2011 Crystal Mile field currently features 12 horses with markets at Luxbet currently lead by the Mick Price-trained Testa My Patience.

Set to jump from barrier six on Saturday and coming off a commanding last-start win on Caulfield Cup Day over 1400 metres, Testa My Patience has finished worse than third just once in their 13-start career to date, that race coincidently having been run at the Valley.

The Races.com.au Crystal Mile Trifecta Tip is #9 Testa My Patience from #10 Blackie and #12 He's Remarkable - Lock it in now at Luxbet!
Join to bet now

Sitting at the top of the Crystal Mile odds at a firm price of $3.40 at Luxbet, Testa My Patience is followed in the markets by Peter Moody’s former Macau runner Luen Yat Forever ($5), Roger James’ Kiwi raider He’s Remarkable ($5.50), the Chris Waller-trained Triple Elegance ($8) on the rails and Toorak Handicap fifth placegetter Dao Dao ($8.50).

Of the top-fancies, Triple Elegance comes off the worst last-start finish on paper having run 10th to Cox Plate contender Secret Admirer in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).

That run, however, was far better than it looks on paper as they got caught in traffic from their awkward barrier 10 draw and gate one tomorrow will suit them far better making them a nice upset chance to back through Luxbet.

“His run in the Epsom was actually quite good when he had no lock form a wide draw,” Waller said.

Waller will also be represented in the Crystal Mile this year by 58kg top-weight Danleigh who is paying $14 after drawing barrier eight.

“His two runs leading into the race have been Ok, he’ll really appreciate the extra distance and he’s run well at Moonee Valley before,” Waller said of Danleigh who took out the 2009 Manikato Stakes at the track two years ago.

While Waller talks up his chances and the punters continue to back the two top elects, Testa My Patience and He’s Remarkable the only two horses to firm in the markets, the Crystal Mile is shaping up as a fairly open affair.

One of the major support races on a bumper nine-event card at Moonee Valley’s Cox Plate Day this Saturday is the 2011 Crystal Mile which has drawn a quality final field of 12 acceptors.

Sign up with Luxbet now for your $500 bonus welcome bet to use on a race of your choice this spring!

Scheduled as Moonee Valley Race 7 at 4:40pm (AEDST), the $200,000 Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) has traditionally been used as a chief lead-up race for gallopers heading towards the $1 million Group 1 Emirates Stakes over the Flemington mile on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Luen Yat Forever is one of the top fancies for the 2011 Crystal Mile on Cox Plate Day

The 2009 Emirates Stakes winner All American came off a third in that year’s Crystal Mile, as did Tears I Cry back in 2007.

This year the Crystal Mile betting favourite at Luxbet is the Mick Price-trained Testa My Patience who has been supported early in from $3.40 to $3.20.

Drawn well mid-field in barrier six and due to be ridden by Craig Newitt, five-year-old Testa Rossa gelding Test My Patience is a very consistent sprinter-miler that has only finished out of the top three once in their 13 career starts.

Over the mile they boast a tidy record of one win, a second and a fourth from three attempts and although Saturday is their first Group race assignment, at their only black-type start to date Testa My Patience finished a game second to Group 1 winner Atomic Force over 1100 metres at Caulfield back in August.

Last start Test My Patience claimed a commanding two and a half length victory over 1400 metres at Caulfield carrying 57kg and dropping right back to 53.5kg in the Crystal Mile they look the deserved favourite.

With an imposing record over the mile and weighted just 52.5kg He’s Remarkable looks great value in the Crystal Mile markets at Luxbet so back them now before word gets out!
Join to bet now

In a relatively open market there are four other 2011 Crystal Mile hopes under double-figures:

#6 Luen Yat Forever ($4.80 Luxbet) – Peter Moody’s in-form six-year-old made an impressive form turnaround when finishing third behind King Mufhasa and Moody’s 2011 Cox Plate hope King’s Rose in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield last start, Luen Yat Forever beaten just half a length

#4 Triple Elegance ($6 Luxbet) – Chris Waller-trained Mossman gelding gets the inside run from barrier one, ran a good third to Sincero in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1500m) at Caulfield two starts back before their disappointing 10th in the Epsom, makes their Melbourne debut here and the draw suits their racing style so a definite place chance

#12 He’s Remarkable ($6 Luxbet) – Roger James’ Kiwi raider comes off great form back home in New Zealand winning back-to-back races over 1400m and 1600m respectively, their mile record is impressive (4:2-1-1) and is weighted to win at just 52.5kg

#3 Dao Dao ($9 Luxbet) – Hawkes-trained galloper ran second in the Emirates Stakes last year, hasn’t won since April of 2009 so can’t see it challenging for the win but was far from disgraced when coming from barrier 13 of 13 to finishing three lengths away fifth in the Toorak last start

Other notable Crystal Mile acceptors this year include last-start Caulfield winner over a mile with 58kg Happy Trails ($12) who is down to 52.5kg on Saturday, Chris Waller-trained veteran Danleigh ($10) who is the 58kg topweight, the Michael Kent-trained Blackie ($15) and Kiwi raider Ginga Dude ($21) who ran third in the Cranbourne Cup last-start.

The 2011 Crystal Mile nominations show trainers certainly have a keen interest in the 1600m Group 2 event at Moonee Valley this Saturday.

All up there are 24 names on the current Crystal Mile nominations list battling it out for a spot in the 15 horse field.

Obviously plenty of them are going to miss out but on the current look of things we’re on track for a full field this Saturday.

One horse that connections will be hoping doesn’t run is Avienus.

The 105 rater is still in the running for a start in the 2011 Cox Plate although at the moment the odds look stacked against it.

In fact there are a number of horses nominated for both the crystal mile as well as the premiere weight for age event.

Blackie, Fast Clip, Luen Yat Forever and Torio’s Quest all fit that bill and we’ll have to wait until the final field announcement to see exactly where they all end up.

One thing we can count on though is that not all of them will run in the Group 1 leaving the Crystal mile with a heap of talent.

That means that for a horse to win this race it’s going to need to be right on top of its game and well and truly run out the full mile distance.

There are plenty of other horses worth noting littered throughout the nominations.

Dao Dao, La Rocket, Little Surfer Girl, More Strawberries, Red Tracer, Triple Elegance and Testa My Patience all combine to make the 2011 Crystal Mile one of the toughest ever.

If you fancy a punt on the race it could be tough but at least guarantee yourself one thing and get the best odds with Luxbet.

At Luxbet they guarantee payouts will never be less than the TAB and for a limited time will also match your initial deposit with a free bet.

Simply register an account now with the code BONUSBET and claim the amount you’re after anywhere up to $500 for the rest of the spring carnival!

Connections of Saturday’s 2011 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Toorak Toff will not be lured by Australasia’s weight-for-age championship, trainer Rick Hore-Lacy confirming the galloper will bypass next month’s $3 million Cox Plate in favour of the Emirates Stakes during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Toorak Toff won the 2011 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield ahead of an Emirates Stakes bid

Show A Heart four-year-old Toorak Toff broke a 13 month drought scoring their first turf triumph since last year’s Golden Rose with an authoritative return to the winner’s stall at Caulfield when beating a crack field in the $350,000 Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).

Backing up from a first-up fifth when beaten only a length by Lone Rock in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at the start of the month, Toorak Toff went out in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2011 as a $12 chance.

First out of the gates, Toorak Toff settled well in third and was given a gun ride by jockey Craig Williams as Master Of Design hit the lead early and set the pace.

On the home straight Toorak Toff drove forward into the lead with stablemate, the fellow Hore-Lacy-trained Pinnacles, moving up into second and the pair raced stride for stride.

With 100 metres left to travel Toorak Toff burst into the lead to beat home Pinnacles ($26) by one and a half lengths while the David Payne-trained Master Of Design ($21) did well to hang on for a close third a further head away.

As the 56.5kg topweight of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes field, Toorak Toff became the first horse since Testa Rossa (58.5kg) in 2000 to carry more than 55.5kg to victory in the feature.

It was an excellent result for Hore-Lacy, not only for the prize money collected from the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes quinella, but to see Toorak Toff back to their best after having been retired last December only to return to racing when a suitable stud price could not be found.

“He’s always been a good horse and will all the problems that he’s had it’s just wonderful to see him come back and beat a good field like the way he did,” Hore-Lacy said.

“He had a throat operation and I’ve just had a lot of problems with him but this time everything’s gone smoothly.”

Toorak Toff will now be kept for the spring’s mile features.

Hore-Lacy named the $350,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield Saturday week, the $200,000 Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley on October 22 and the $1 million Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, November 5, as the galloper’s targets.

“He definitely won’t run in the Cox Plate,” Hore-Lacy said

“He’s a sprinter miler.

“The best stallions are sprinter milers and I think this horse is going to be a wonderful stallion so the program will be the Toorak, the Waterford Crystal Mile and the Emirates Stakes, all two weeks apart.”

They are ambitious goals for Toorak Toff who has now won six of their 14 starts for $1.27 million in prize money, but who is yet to win over the mile.

After missing the start in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and falling back to last, boom three-year-old and $2.90 favourite Smart Missile never featured in the race and eventually finished four lengths away in a disappointing 10th.

Smart Missile’s trainer Anthony Cummings opted to run the last-start Golden Rose runner-up in the Sir Rupert Clarke against older horses despite having drawn the far outside gate 17 of 17.

Prior to Saturday’s loss, Smart Missile was at the top of the Luxbet markets for the upcoming 2011 Caulfield Guineas on October 8.

They have since dropped into second spot in the Caulfield Guineas odds paying $3.80 with Peter Snowden’s well-performing Exceed And Excel colt Helmet soaring into $3.40 favouritism after their win in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude at Saturday’s Caulfield meet.

Brett Prebble, aboard Smart Missile for the first time in the Sir Rupert replacing the injured Glen Boss, tipped the colt as a genuine $1 million Caulfield Guineas chance saying they were “crying out” for the 1600 metres.

“The last 150 metres was the best part of his race,” Prebble said when analysing Smart Missile’s run on Saturday

“I think he’s crying out for the mile. There’s no doubt he’s a serious horse.”

Below are the full Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2011 results so you can see exactly how the field finished.

If you are now out for the best Caulfield Guineas price on Smart Missile, or want to get ready to back Toorak Toff for their next run, Australia’s premier online bookmaker Luxbet have you covered.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained Sound Journey won the fourth race at Cox Plate Day this afternoon, beating a crack field in the $200,000 Group 2 Patinack Farm Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

After a delayed start due to Gold Salute putting up a fight to get into the stalls, six-year-old entire Sound Journey was ridden patiently by Michael Rodd and fought hard in the final strides to secure a narrow win and maintain his unbeaten record over the mile.

The John Thompson-trained Gathering settled at the front of the field and lead throughout before being put under heavy pressure on the home straight.

Gathering soon faded back while Sound Journey and Trader moved up through the field.

A big late run from the Anthony Cummings-trained Trader saw him hit the front and run clear, seemingly the winner.

Then Sound Journey ($15 Luxbet) stormed home finding the line just ahead of Trader with Peter Snowden’s Drumbeats finishing third.

Hot favourite Firebolt settled well back and was never a threat.

Sound Journey has had mixed form over his career, but trainer Kavanagh was happy with the result the addition on the tongue tie bought today, the son of Good Journey bringing his record to seven wins from 24 starts.

The next event on the card at Moonee Valley today is one punters have been waiting for – Race 5 the $300,000 Group 2 Schweppes Stakes (1200m).

Black Caviar is the hot favourite dominating the betting markets, but for more value the Races.com.au team are tipping Hot Danish to cause an upset at good odds through Luxbet.

With the $200,000 Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) set to run as Race 4 at Cox Plate Day at 2:40pm today, the Races.com.au team have an exclusive late tip on the event.

While we have Rockpecker rated special to win at good odds, who looks a top pick drawn on the rails, we have identified #13 Trader as the best value.

The Anthony Cummings-trained Trader is currently at $19 through Luxbet and represents good Each Way value so head over and place your bets at this premiere online bookie before word catches on and the odds shorten.

The second Group race on the Cox Plate Day card this afternoon is Race 4, the $200,000 Group 2 Patinack Farm Crystal Mile (1600m), set to start at 2:40pm (AEDST).

The 2010 Crystal Mile has attracted a final field of 13 top milers, with Firebolt the warm favourite to win currently paying $4.40 at Luxbet.

Rockpecker can win the Crystal Mile at juicy odds so get on them at Luxbet now!
Join to bet now

The Roger James-trained Firebolt is a strong New Zealand galloper who took out the Shannon Stakes emphatically last month before finishing 11th in the Epsom Handicap last start.

Punters are tipping the gelding to bounce back from his flat Epsom performance, however the Races.com.au fancy another runner to the Crystal Mile today and are backing #8 Rockpecker.

Moonee Valley – Race 4 – Crystal Mile

Races.com.au Favourite: #8 Rockpecker – Rated Special to Win at $9.00 Luxbet

Best Horses to Add into a Trifecta: #9 Snow Alert, #2 Drumbeats and #1 Rock Kingdom – Luxbet

Seven-year-old Rockpecker is at a generous price of $9.00 to win the Crystal Mile, the Ken Fythe-trained gelding drawn ideally in barrier one. A tough runner that always gets into the mix, Rockpecker is coming off a second place to Gathering over 1400m at Flemington and can cause an upset at good odds.

Our three favourites in the field to include in exotic wagers are Snow Alert, Drumbeats and Rock Kingdom.

Drawn favourably in barrier two, the Chris Waller-trained Snow Alert is resuming after a short spell following two gallant second place finishes in the Wyong Cup and Newcastle Cup, which will see the five-year-old Red Ransom gelding fresh and back to his preferred 1600m distance.

Drumbeats is another Red Ransom five-year-old and top contender today, despite drawing wide with barrier 13. Was flat in the Toorak Handicap after being caught out wide, but had two earlier runs in Sydney this season that were impressive.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Rock Kingdom is our other Place pick, dropping back in weight today giving them a good chance to finish in the money at just their second Moonee Valley start after an eighth place Cox Plate finish here 12 months ago.

There is lots of value to be found in Moonee Valley Race 4 today, so make sure you get your wagers at the hottest price by heading to Luxbet now!
