Sunday racing this weekend is headlined by the 2018 Hobart Cup in Tasmania, betting tips and the updated odds on the summer classic found below.
Set to run as Race 8 at 5:08pm (AEDT) as the latest Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival feature, this season’s Group 3 $250,000 Hobart Cup (2400m) features a line-up of 11 smart stayers.
Heading the latest Hobart Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.20 for the win in an open market is Andrea Mantegna in gate four on the 54kg minimum.
Damian Lane is booked to ride the in-form Giant’s Causeway entire whose lead-up run saw the chestnut cart 58kg to an impressive five length win over 2250m at Morphettville Parks on January 27.
Sunday marks the first Tasmanian run for Andrew Mantegna, but the bookies are taking no chances on the well-weighted Darren Weir-trained visitor who looks a winning hope getting out over a mile and a half.
The dangers looking at the current Hobart Cup betting markets include Barry Campbell’s last start Brighton Cup winner Eastender ($4.80) who has Craig Newitt aboard again, the 59kg top-weight Dee I Cee ($5) coming off a Warwick Farm second in the Australia Day Cup over this distance and smart Adelaide-trained mare Pretty Punk ($5).
So will the top fancies salute in this year’s Hobart Cup results or is there an upset pending from the likes of Brilliant Jet ($14) in the outside alley or the veteran track specialist Up Cups ($15) who won the race in 2016?
There are a host of winning chances in this year’s Hobart Cup field but think $5 is a good price for this consistent Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Rebel Raider mare from Adelaide. She is proven up to 2500m so should enjoy getting up to the distance off a host of 2000m runs. She was a Flemington winner in mid-January before a lead-up fourth at Caulfield. Can improve off that, gets in okay weight-wise and doesn’t know how to run a bad race. She oozes quality and deserves to win a race like this.
Tipping an all-mare Hobart Cup quinella this summer and like the double-figure offering for this six-year-old daughter of Wordsmith. She is well-proven at the Hobart track (21:5-7-4) and has been in ultra-consistent form all campaign. Three latest runs are all top three efforts including carrying 57kg at WFA here on January 28 in the Summer Cup to place second. She comes down in weight and can surprise again.
Plenty of money coming in for this well-supported local market mover and it could be worth following the punters. A previous winner at the track and has won over 2400m at Launceston in the wet last May. Hasn’t finished worse than fourth since then and would-up with a good 2100m victory here with the same hoop and weight a month ago. Each way chance to quicken late and fly home.
