Cosmic Force To Be Reckoned With in 2020 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint Betting

The bookies are tipping a return to winning form for the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Cosmic Force at Royal Randwick on Saturday with the Group 2 winning colt the firming favourite in 2020 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint betting.

Day 2 of ‘The Championships’ features another bumper 10-race program including the three-year-old sprinters facing off in the Group 2 $500,000 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m).

The half-a-million-dollar feature has attracted a dozen starters and Deep Field colt Cosmic Force leads the markets at current Arrowfield 3YO Sprint odds of $3.60 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

Drawn well midfield in barrier six with James McDonald coming back aboard, the top fancy is out to hand co-trainer Peter Snowden with his third win in the race formerly known as the Royal Sovereign Stakes following his previous victories with El Cambio (2008) and Sidestep (2014).

Cosmic Force was a dominant winner at the track and distance in last year’s Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) before his trip south when sixth to Exceedance down the ‘Straight Six’ at Flemington in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).

This prep he has had two runs when a first-up second behind Villami in a Black-Type sprint over 1100m at Randwick before his luckless 13th in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill.

He rises back up in the weights here but is down in grade facing his own age and was explosive in a recent 7.3 length trial win over 850m on a Soft Kensington track late last month.

There are a further four hopefuls under $10 in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint betting markets this season including the $5 second elect Flit for Godolphin.

The James Cummings-trained daughter of Medaglia D’Oro is out to be the second filly in three years to win following Catchy in 2018 and she presents fit fourth-up this weekend.

Winner of Caulfield’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) last October, Flit won the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes at this track and distance fresh before running sixth in a blanket finish when only 1.6 lengths off Probabeel in the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m).

She was one of 15 starters in the $5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m) last start in Melbourne when luckless from the outside barrier running a disappointing second last.

That was a far tougher race and back to 1200m at Randwick here carrying 54.5kg makes her a very attractive bet in the Arrowfield Sprint.

Third favourite at $6.50 following closely is another for Team Snowden, last start winner California Zimbol jumping from barrier four with Brenton Avdulla aboard.

The ultra-consistent I Am Invincible filly took her record up to four wins from eight starts on Slipper Day at Rosehill with her win over Dawn Passage in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m).

That has been a crucial form line into the Arrowfield Sprint in recent years with Sidestep (2014) and Derryn (2017) the latest to do the double.

Prior to that she ran third in the same race Cosmic Force was runner-up in on March 7 and California Zimbol gets the advantage of a two kilo drop in weight from last time out.

If Cosmic Force doesn’t turn up it certainly looks the fillies’ race to lose with the other single-figure with Anaheed ($8.50) and Villami ($9) rounding out the single-figure fancies.

The third runner for the Snowden stable in the event, Anaheed is a multiple Group winning daughter of Fastnet Rock who also caught the eye at The Valley last October when third to Loving Gaby in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m).

She kicked off her autumn with a win in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield before things went amiss with two heavy Group 1 losses running 14th in the Oakleigh Plate and 11th in The Galaxy.

Up in weight but down in grade for Saturday, Anaheed is a three-time winner from five runs at Randwick including her Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes win over Flit on the same day last year.

Gerald Ryan’s aforementioned Foxwedge filly Villami meanwhile is yet to win over further than 1100m, but did beat Cosmic Force home in the Fireball last month before the Star Kingdom sixth she’s out to improve on here.
