Godolphin made history last summer winning the Gold Coast’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic with their first ever runner Exhilarates and now the bookies have slashed the price on the stable’s gun youngster Conceited to give the blue army successive wins.

The James Cummings-trained Brazen Beau colt Conceited debuted at Flemington on Saturday in the first and caught the eye straight away with a narrow but impressive victory in the $125,000 #LovetheHorse (1100m) two-years-old handicap.

Drawn barrier three in a seven-starter field, Conceited jumped the $3.60 favourite with Damian Lane in the saddle and didn’t disappoint holding off Jabali Ridge in a tight finish.

In third a further two and a half-lengths back was the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained I Am Invincible filly Unstoppabelle backing up from her win on debut at Morphettville in late November.

Conceited was a $625,000 Magic Millions buy and took out $103,750 in total prize money at his first start, his success in which qualified him for the 2020 Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast on January 11.

Godolphin stable rep Sean Keough confirmed the Magic Millions Classic was definitely being considered for Conceited, who wore the blinkers at Flemington, this Queensland Summer Racing Carnival.

“I think so,” Keogh said to the media post-win.

“James (Cummings) hasn’t spoken too much about it. But just seeing what we had there today definitely opened our eyes to it.

“He’s a big, scopey type of horse.

“He’s taking his work well and he’s got a bit of natural talent.”

His $68,750 winners’ cheque was boosted by the Super VOBIS and VOGIS Gold bonuses on offer in the race.

After an easy start in the handicap, the up-and-comer showed a nice will to win late when digging deep to hold off the late charge from the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained fellow debutant Jabali Ridge.

“He has never been off the bridle before and all of a sudden you are in a race and clicking him up – he probably had every right to not want to stop,” Lane said of the gutsy winner after the hard-fought success.

“He has really improved … I rode him in his first jumpout and he went well, and I hadn’t seen him since.

“He has really turned into a racehorse in the last few weeks.

“He’s a nice horse. He’s not a two-year-old type.

“He’s a big boy and he’s going to be better next year, whatever he does.

“So it’s promising to see him doing these sorts of things early.

“Three weeks ago in a trial he was really green and really wayward. He’s had another one since and then another week into the race and he’s really starting to furnish into a racehorse.

“It’s the first time he’s been fully tested so it was good to see him respond.”

Lane won last season’s Golden Slipper Stakes on the Godolphin-raced Kiamichi and was hoping to continue the big two-year-old wins for them this season.

“I wouldn’t put anything past him, just because of how much he’s improved already this prep, but I would be surprised,” he said.

“Just because for me he probably looks like more of a three-year-old.”
