Catchy Kicks Off in Black Caviar Lightning 2018

Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes winning filly Catchy will be tested at the top level first-up this autumn with co-trainer David Hayes confirming a resuming run in the 2018 Black Caviar Lightning.

Lindsay Park plan to keep their top fillies Catchy, Formality and Tulip separated early on in the autumn.

Of the trio the one Hayes has been most happy to see back in work is Fastnet Rock filly Catchy, a winner of close to $1.5 million in prize money over a 10 start career that has netted five wins to date.

“She has come back very well. I think she’s just getting better,” the Hall of Famer told Racing Victoria.

Catchy is best known for her Group 1 $1.5 million Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) win last Melbourne Festival of Racing.

She enjoyed a subsequent Group 1 victory down the Flemington straight second-up last September in the Danehill Stakes and also went on to place a close third when just over a length third to Mighty Boss in the Group 1 $2 million Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Believing Catchy didn’t quite run out a solid mile, Hayes dropped her in distance for the Group 1 $1 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on VRC Derby Day.

The filly finished a disappointing 18th in the race behind Merchant Navy in her final spring run, but gets the chance to atone in the autumn.

Hayes has scheduled a return to Flemington Racecourse for Catchy on February 17 where she will take on a star-studded of sprinters in the Group 1 $750,000 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m).

“Catchy will resume in the Lightning and then we’ll keep her to sprint races at least initially this preparation,” he confirmed.

Also set to run first-up in the Black Caviar Lightning field this autumn are the likes of Manikato Stakes winning four-year-old Hey Doc and The Everest – Darley Classic champion for Peter & Paul Snowden Redzel.

Redzel is tipped as the horse to beat in pre-field Black Caviar Lightning odds at bookmakers around the country, while Catchy is a double-figure chance to become the first three-year-old winner of the race since her sire Fastnet Rock (2005).

The year before, Regimental Gal (2004) took out the race as a three-year-old filly.

As for Formality, Hayes has scheduled a separate elite level autumn target for her resuming run in the Group 1 $500,000 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on Blue Diamond Day, February 24.

Also by Fastnet Rock, Formality also boasts a 50% winning strike rate from her 10 career assignments.

A dual Group 2 winner, she was last seen running just a quarter-length back third in the Coolmore Stud Stakes trifecta.

Hayes also pointed out a February 10 first-up target for Tulip, the well-bred daughter of Pierro also a Coolmore Stud Stakes graduate when 10th on the back of her $10 million The Everest (1200m) fifth to Redzel, in the Group 3 $150,000 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m).

“All three are going very well and I think they’ll all have good autumn preparation,” he said.
