2021 Robert Sangster Stakes Field & Odds: Instant Celebrity Among Local Hopes

The Phillip Stokes-trained Instant Celebrity is one of the key local South Australian-trained hopefuls in an open edition of the Robert Sangster Stakes 2021 this weekend in Adelaide.

Morphettville is host to a double-shot of elite level racing on Saturday including seventeen fillies and mares facing off in the Group 1 $500,000 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m).

It is an interesting line-up in the weight-for-age sprint this autumn with plenty of form lines to consider and no genuine standout in Robert Sangster Stakes betting.

At $11 and looking potential value through Ladbrokes.com.au is Stokes’ Not A Single Doubt filly Instant Celebrity taking on the older mares from a gun barrier six draw second-up.

Jockey Craig Williams comes aboard the ride on the three-year-old looking for his first win in the event replacing Kayla Crowther in the saddle.

Last spring Williams rode Instant Celebrity for two excellent Caulfield performances, the filly winning the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude before a third to Odeum only two lengths beaten in the Group 1 over a mile.

She resumed at home at Morphettville on April 17 in the Listed Redelva Stakes (1100m) and was good crossing two lengths back fourth with 58kg.

This weekend she looks ideally suited stepping-up to the 1200m, has drawn the perfect gate and comes back in weight to 55kg.

The latest Robert Sangster Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au following Tuesday’s final acceptances are led by the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Sisstar at $7.

Perth’s premier hoop William Pike is in Adelaide for the ride on the in-form Zoustar four-year-old who chases a fourth win on the trot going up in grade.

Last November she won Ballarat’s Magic Millions Classic over 1100m before returning this March at The Valley for a 955m short-distance victory.

Pike jumped aboard for her latest start on April 17 at Caulfield when Sisstar defeated Lyre by a length in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1000m).

The Godolphin-raced runner-up in that lead-up event in Melbourne, the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Lyre is also backing-up in the Robert Sangster Stakes on Saturday.

A now four-year-old daughter of Lonhro, Lyre is best known for her Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes success as a two-year-old in February of 2019.

She has been competitive in plenty since without recording a win, including her second behind Bella Vella in last year’s Robert Sangster Stakes results.

Lyre was also third at Morphettville at her next start behind Trekking in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) and had her third run at the track two back on March 27 when second in the Listed Manihi Classic (1100m).

She has earned a bridesmaid tag since her Group 1 win as a juvenile and comes into this year’s Robert Sangster having finished second three times on the trot.

Robert Sangster Stakes betting has Lyre at $10 to go one better than her effort last year, but she has work to do having suffered an early blow drawing the extreme outside gate (17).

The Royal Blue of Godolphin are also represented in the race by the James Cummings-trained Flit ($9) looking for her first victory since the Silver Eagle (1300m) in Sydney last October.

She too has drawn wide (barrier 16) and comes off a last start fifth to Masked Crusader at The Valley from March in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).

The only other single-figure hope at $8 and also looking for atonement off an unplaced lead-up run is the Anthony Cummings-trained Mizzy.

A five-year-old Zoustar mare, Mizzy is a super-honest type who was in excellent form at blow-out odds earlier this prep.

She jumped at 70/1 in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick on March 6 to run a nostril-flare second to Savatiano, before another Group 1 second this time behind Krone at 25/1 in the Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill a fortnight later.

Things went amiss for her in the Group 1 George Ryder (1500m) however when she finished 11th last time out, but there’s money to suggest from barrier one in Adelaide she can make amends on Saturday.
