2021 Makybe Diva Stakes Results: Incentivise Firms in Turnbull Stakes Betting

Peter Moody officially returned to the Group 1 winner’s stall at Flemington on Saturday with newly acquired gelding Incentivise, who made every post a winner in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

The five-year-old changed hands last month from the Steve Tregea team and was looking to extend his winning streak to seven in a row first-up following a very successful maiden campaign in Queensland.

The son of Shamus Award wrapped up his winter prep with a whopping 12L win in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup over 2400m at Eagle Farm, and not surprisingly, was installed as a $3.90 chance on Saturday in his return to the races.

In what was a genuine Group 1 field made up of Ladbrokes Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet and last fortnight’s Winx Stakes winner Mo’unga, it was Incentivise who led all the way to take out the $1 million feature thanks to another brilliant ride from Brett Pebble.

The pair established the lead from Tofane coming out of the gate and would eventually kick clear with just over a furlong to go as both the aforementioned Mo’unga and Sir Dragonet charged the line to fill the placings.

Pebble, who claimed his second Group 1 of the spring, said after the race that he was always confident in the late stages.

“He had a nice time in front and he had his action good, he was on his right leg and it was game over,” Pebble told Racing.com.

“Once I had him on his right leg, which he was at Cranbourne trials, I was never really doubtful. Today he was really balanced and really relaxed sort of horse, which is a real bonus. He’s underneath you but he’s not aggressive, I tried to give him as soft a run as I could because I knew we had a long way to go.”

After proving himself over further earlier in the year, the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) looks to be the next logical step for Incentivise back at Flemington on October 2.

Moody’s impressive galloper has firmed into the $4.60 second-elect behind Zaaki in Ladbrokes’ All-In market, but the champion trainer didn’t discount lining up in the Caulfield Cup a month later.

“I think it’s very encouraging at this stage of the spring. We’ve only got one more run before the Cup, which will probably be the Turnbull, so time to build on it and hopefully we can get him on his Melbourne leg at some stage,” Moody said after the race.

Incentivise has firmed from $7.00 into $5.00 favouritism for the Caulfield Cup, while he’s also seen a trim in Melbourne Cup betting ($12 into $9.00).
