2020 Australian Oaks Field: Favourite Colette Draws Four

Godolphin’s Adrian Knox Stakes winning filly Colette has drawn ideally in barrier four as she prepares to jump the punters’ pick in Australian Oaks 2020 betting in Sydney on Saturday.

Day 2 of ‘The Championships’ features another four elite level autumn features including the three-year-old fillies facing off in the Group 1 The Star Australian Oaks (2400m).

This year’s edition of the mile and a half classic is worth a reduced $500,000 in prizemoney due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but the 14-starter Australian Oaks field remains top class.

Trainer James Cummings chases his first Australian Oaks win with well-bred Hallowed Crown filly Colette winning her way into the event with her commanding 2.8 length victory in last Saturday’s Group 2 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m).

Having beaten home her rivals by nearly three lengths in her maiden Black-Type assignment, Collette looks a progressive type as she chases win number four on the trot with Glen Boss aboard on the weekend.

From 2006-19 five favourites in Australian Oaks betting saluted for the punters including the last three on the trot: Bonneval ($4.20 in 2017), Unforgotten ($4 in 2018) and Verry Elleegant ($2 in 2019).

Colette may be out to continue the hot streak of favourites in the race, but she chases the Adrian Knox Stakes – ATC Oaks double for the first time since Royal Descent (2013).

Colette is at $3 in Australian Oaks betting at Ladbrokes.com.au and is followed by three other single-figure fancies in a tight top half of the market.

Hot on her heels a $4 is the early market mover, Jamie Richards’ Group 1 Surround Stakes winning filly from NZ Probabeel.

The ultra-consistent daughter of Savabeel won the Surround Stakes fresh before back-to-back Rosehill seconds in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) and Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).

She has work to do from out in barrier 12 this weekend, her Surround Stakes winning hoop Opie Bosson back in the saddle after Probabeel was ridden by Kerrin McEvoy for her latest two starts.

The close $4.40 third elect is then the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Vinery Stud Stakes winning filly Shout The Bar.

Waterhouse has prepared three Australian Oaks winners in the past 20 years, but none since Once Were Wild in 2010.

She looks to break the decade long drought this weekend with Shout The Bar who is out to complete the Vinery Stud Stakes – Australian Oaks double for the second time in as many years following the success of Verry Elleegant last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Rounding out the fillies under $10 for the win at $8 is then Nudge for trainer Chris Waller who chases his fourth ATC Oaks victory and third on the trot.

Jumping form barrier six with dual Australian Oaks winning hoop James McDonald in the saddle, Fastnet Rock filly Nudge is winless this prep but caught the eye when third in the Vinery Stud Stakes last time out.
