Trainer Grahame Begg has unearthed a genuine hope to hand him another Blue Diamond Stakes win with his progressive filly Mildred dominating the 2020 Chairman’s Stakes results at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday.
Two years ago, Begg prepared Written Tycoon colt Written By (2018) for his win in the $1.5 million Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).
He returns this Melbourne Festival of Racing with well-bred Hinchinbrook filly Mildred on the Blue Diamond path following her first-up success in the Group 3 $160,000 MRC Chairman’s Stakes (1000m).
“She just goes out and puts it on the line,” Begg said post-win.
“From day one she’s always put herself right up there.
“It’s very exciting.”
Already a Black-Type winner in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Plate (1000m) at Flemington second-up last October, she also ran on Cox Plate Day at The Valley when fifth in a blanket finish behind Ideas Man in the Inglis-restricted event.
Racing fresh in the Chairman’s Stakes in the rain, Mildred relished the Soft track with jockey Jordan Childs reuniting for an impressive first-up victory to kick off her autumn.
“She’s a real professional,” Childs, who rode Written By to victory in the Blue Diamond Stakes, said.
“She makes my job quite easy.
“She’s a real professional type…good for her to come back and do it again.
“Hopefully she can keep going on with it.”
Speedy from the inside alley, Childs took Mildred straight to the front from Frederick The Dane with Rock Of Kryptonite racing three deep in third.
The Lindsay Park-trained favourite Aryaaf in her first run since the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes win at Flemington last Melbourne Cup Day meanwhile was poised behind the leading trio in fourth just ahead of Ideas Man.
Mildred cornered well and led into the straight as Aryaaf, needing a run, went back to the inside.
Over the final furlong it was the two fillies fighting it out with Mildred ($13) and Aryaaf ($2.70) going stride-for-stride before the eventual winner fought back and came away with a one length win ahead of the beaten favourite.
Rounding out the Chairman’s Stakes trifecta in third was the also David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Frederick The Dane ($20) who finished a distant five and a quarter-lengths off the winner.
“It was a great ride by Jordy,” Begg said.
“He just let her roll along where she was in a good comfort zone and she finished off strong which was great.”
It was the ninth time in 11 years that a filly won the Chairman’s Stakes with Mildred joining Loving Gaby (2019), Ennis Hill (2018), Formality (2017), Thurlow (2015), Nayeli (2014), Metastasio (2013), Mama’s Choice (2012) and Crystal Lily (2010).
Begg confirmed plans to race Mildred again before the 2020 Blue Diamond Stakes on February 22 with the filly set to chase a third win from as many starts down the Flemington straight in the Listed $140,000 Talindert Stakes (1100m) in a fortnight’s time.
“She’ll run in the Talindert…she’s been very effective up the straight,” he said.
“She won’t be well-weighted for winning another Group race today, but it’s all about maximizing her value.”
Before the Chairman’s Stakes win Mildred was a $51 outsider in all-in Blue Diamond Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.
She has subsequently firmed into $26, while Aryaaf has eased out from $14 to $17.
