Montefilia cemented her spot in the history books at Royal Randwick on Saturday by becoming the first filly to win both the Group 1 Flight Stakes and the Spring Champion Stakes in the same calendar year.

After holding on narrowly to win the Flight Stakes only a week ago, David Payne’s three-year-old once again left connections and punters on the edge of their seats in another exciting dash to the line on the short backup.

Jason Collett, who also claimed his second Group 1 win, managed to time his run to perfection after shifting off the fence to reel in the leading Lion’s Roar over the final 100m.

“Everything panned out perfectly, I got the barrier to suit, it was just a matter of getting her into the clear at the right time,” Collett said.

“There is expectation there to get the result when you are riding the favourite, so it was great to just get the result. When I first came to Sydney, Chris Waller and David gave me a lot of opportunities, I stuffed a few of them up, so I’m very glad to get this win for David and his team.”

With the track playing fairly, Montefilia was another handy fill-up on a day that saw several favourites get up.

The now two-time Group 1 winner went around at $2.80 at Ladbrokes.com.au and now looks set to target the $1 million Kennedy Oaks (2500m) among the fillies on November 5 at Flemington.

“I will have a look at the race in Melbourne. You have to look at it. She has only had seven runs now but we’ll see how she is in a couple of days as we will be taking on the fillies again. I feel she will be better over 2500m,” trainer David Payne said following Saturday’s win.

Montefilia can be found as the $3.80 favourite in the all-in 2020 Kennedy Oaks odds at Ladbrokes.com.au after firming in from $6.00 prior to Saturday’s race.

Lion’s Roar, who was shooting for a hat-trick of wins, also lost no admirers running second in what was her first run at Group level.

John O’Shea’s three-year-old got clear heading into the final turn and showed plenty of muster to finish in the money.
