2020 Coolmore Stud Stakes Field & Betting Update: September Runs Favourite

Chris Waller’s up-in-grade filly September Run is clear favourite to beat home the boys in 2020 Coolmore Stud Stakes down the iconic ‘Straight Six’ at HQ on Derby Day.

The daughter of Exceed And Excel is one of 14 three-year-old sprinters engaged in this year’s Group 1 $1.5 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) that is set to run as Flemington Race 6 at 3:00pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

Despite a wide barrier 12 draw and this being her first Group 1 assignment, September Run sits comfortably at the top of the Coolmore Stud Stakes odds online at $4 and firming through Ladbrokes.com.au.

The consistent filly comes off back-to-back wins at the track over 1100m having shown a great affinity for the straight with her recent Black-Type victories.

Craig Williams retains the ride having guided her to success in her two lead-up runs when carrying more weight.

September Run only needs to handle the extra 100m here to hand Waller his fourth Coolmore Stud Stakes success following the stable’s hat-trick with Zoustar (2013), Brazen Beau (2014) and Japonisme (2015).

The danger occupying the second line of Coolmore Stud Stakes betting this spring at $5.50 is the proven Group 1 champion, Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott’s Golden Slipper winner Farnan.

It’s a case of the up-and-comer against the star juvenile with the latter, Not A Single Doubt colt Farnan, out to return to winning form second-up.

He won three straight including the $3.5 million Golden Slipper in Sydney over the autumn before his first-up loss when running a disappointing fifth to Rothfire in the Group 2 Run To The Rose on September 12.

Kept fresh since and winning a recent Gosford trial by over five lengths, Farnan is now out to prove he still has the same star quality making his Melbourne race debut in the Coolmore.

Following closely in the markets at $6.50 is then the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Wild Ruler with the outside alley for jockey James McDonald to overcome.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden won this race back in 2011 with star colt Sepoy and now looks for a second one this time in partnership with his son Paul.

Wild Ruler chases a third consecutive win with the son of Snitzel having enjoyed a nice start to the spring in Sydney including a lead-up victory on October 10 in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m).

He charged home as the odds-on fancy in that, with McDonald aboard, by two lengths and how he handles the straight at Flemington will be key to whether he continues his winning ways in the Coolmore.

Rounding out the single-figure fancies in the sprint showdown are the flying Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Swats That ($8.50) on the move in betting and one-time favourite Anders ($9.50) looking to atone for his third last start in the Blue Sapphire.
