The upcoming Derby races look the go for Lindsey Smith’s untapped young staying type Adelaide Ace who was too good for his rivals in Saturday’s Caulfield Autumn Classic 2020 on Blue Diamond Stakes Day.
The punters came in a big way for the Savabeel gelding in the Group 2 $200,000 Caulfield Autumn Classic (1800m) with Adelaide Ace firming into $2.50 favouritism at Ladbrokes.com.au pre-jump.
Boasting the fitness edge over the field racing third up from the inside alley, Adelaide Ace was given the perfect ride in front with jockey John Allen controlling the race from start to finish.
Last time out the horse finished under a length back third behind Group 1 winner Microphone in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at the track on February 8.
Getting out to a more suitable distance in the Autumn Classic proved the key for the up-and-comer with Allen slowing the tempo and getting away with all the cheap sectionals.
“Nice even temp, he relaxed beautiful and gave a good kick when I needed him to,” Allen said post-win.
Jumping well from barrier one, Adelaide Ace led from the Grahame Begg-trained Nonconformist ($5.50) throughout and the horses that sat one-two in the run ended up putting a gap on the field to run the quinella.
At the 600m Allen quickened slightly on the front runner and Adelaide Ace pinged for home.
Nonconformist stuck with him, but the favourite gave a good kick 100m out despite still showing a little greenness running into the whip on the straight.
On the line Adelaide finished one and a quarter-lengths ahead of the runner-up who was three lengths clear of the third-placed Legion Of Merit ($21).
One-time favourite, returning VRC Oaks winner Miami Bound meanwhile only managed to run six and a half lengths back eighth beating home just one other runner first-up.
Smith will wait to see how his horse pulls up before confirming a next-up run, although backing Adelaide Ace up in the Group 1 $1 million Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington next Saturday looks unlikely.
Instead the longer-distance feature races in Sydney could be the go including the Group 1 $2 million Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 4 during ‘The Championships’.
Following the Caulfield Autumn Classic results Adelaide Ace has firmed in from $41 to $34 in the 2020 Australian Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au and $51 to $26 to win the Australian Derby.
