While the Doomben races had to be abandoned due to wild storms and heavy rainfall in Brisbane on Friday afternoon, it is fine in Sydney for Villiers Stakes Day and the current Good (4) Randwick track rating looks set to stay across the card.

Racing at Randwick kicks off this afternoon at 1:00pm (AEDT) and the first of the feature events is Race 3 – the Listed $140,000 Christmas Cup (2400m).

Trainer Chris Waller has dominated the Christmas Cup results with four winners over the past nine years and makes a three-pronged assault on the mile and a half event in 2019.

Waller’s last Christmas Cup winner was Vassal in 2017 and today his best hope lies in the $3.30 favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au, 58kg top weight Alward coming off an ATC Cup victory at Rosehill from late November.

A bumper field of mostly unraced two-year-olds then do battle in the lucrative Restricted Listed $500,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) where the Waller-trained emergency Canadian Spice (7) has gained a start after the early scratchings of Neutron (17) and Proud Mia (5).

A class line-up of summer sprinters will run in this year’s Listed $14,000 Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) at 4:00pm (AEDT) where the withdrawal of Insensata (9) leaves 11 hopefuls led in betting by Team Snowden’s Exceed And Excel entire Signore Fox ($3.20).

The day’s marquee race the runs as Race 7 at 4:40pm (AEDT) with 13 remaining milers in the 2019 Villiers Stakes field following the scratchings of Le Juge (14) and Strome (8) from the $25,000 Group 2 showdown.

Updated Villiers Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are firmly led by the Mark Newnham-trained market mover Quackerjack ($3.20) coming off a narrow second in the $1 million The Gong (1600m).
