Thousand Guineas Odds Firm on Prelude Champ Acting

A late entry fee of $27,500 is set to be paid for the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Acting to line-up in the 2019 Thousand Guineas after the smart Savabeel filly’s win in the Group 2 $250,000 Prelude (1400m).

Acting was not one of the nominated fillies for the Group 1 $1 million Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) when early entries for the October 12 feature closed on August 6.

A week later however she proved her potential at Sandown-Hillside winning a BM64 for three-year-old fillies with 59.5kg on her back in the wet over 1300m.

She franked that form on Underwood Stakes Day when making her black-type debut at Caulfield Racecourse against a high-class field of fillies, many proven at the top level during their two-year-old seasons.

A host of the best-fancied in the Thousand Guineas Prelude field were drawn out wide, including the luckless favourite Flit, and subsequently went back in the run.

From the favourable inside alley, jockey Tommy Berry was able to bounce out of the barriers on Acting and take up front-running.

Berry went for home on the straight and Acting responded, the $21 outsider charging to the line for a one and a half-length all-the-way victory.

It was a massive Thousand Guineas Prelude trifecta with two genuine roughies finishing in the money with the Anthony Freedman-trained Southbank ($41) and Foxwedge filly Barbie’s Fox ($61) second and third respectively.

“Barriers usually win the races,” Berry said post-victory.

“She drew the rail and she’s got great gate speed.

“I got some cheap furlongs midrace…she was always going to take some beating.

“Unfortunately I’m suspended for her Grand Final [in the Thousand Guineas] but it’s a nice ride for someone else.

“For a Savabeel mare, she’s got a great temperament.”

Co-trainer Busuttin said the team were confident heading into the race and confirmed plans to back her up in the Group 1.

“She’s a fantastic filly,” he said.

“A great stallion [Savabeel], they just keep winning.

“The form out of her is great.

“If they’re good enough, they always catch-up as three-year-olds.

“We’ll be back in a couple of weeks now for the Group 1.

“She’s got plenty of natural speed as a good horse, but we’ll find out about the mile.”

All-in Thousand Guineas 2019 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on Acting have firmed in from $31 to $12 despite the filly officially not holding a nomination.

The Prelude – Thousand Guineas double was last completed back in 2009 by Irish Lights.

Despite finishing three lengths back ninth as the beaten favourite, the Godolphin-raced Flit has firmed at the top of futures Thousand Guineas betting into $3.20 with the bookies happy to forgive her run.
