Ladbrokes Cox Plate 2019 Second Acceptances: 68 Chase Winx Status

For the first time in five years the $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate will be a Winx-free affair and following second acceptances for the weight-for-age championship there are 68 horses hoping to step into her shoes.

Held at The Valley over 2040m on Saturday October 26, this year marks the 99th edition of the W.S. Cox Plate.

Without four-time champion Winx (2015-18) in the mix it shapes-up as a much more open affair and on Tuesday Racing Victoria took 27 more second Cox Plate second declarations than at the same stage last year.

Among the official 2019 Ladbrokes Cox Plate second acceptances are 10 internationally-trained raiders out to be the first since the then Irish-trained Adelaide (2014) to steal the trophy from the locals.

That is double the number of raiders in the 2018 Cox Plate second acceptances and includes three for Aidan O’Brien who prepared Adelaide for his successful raid five years ago: Hunting Horn, Magic Wand and Mohawk.

Heading the latest all-in Cox Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are three $6 equal favourites including one of those internationals.

The Japanese-trained Heart’s Cry mare Lys Graciuex won over 2200m at elite level back home with Australia’s Damian Lane in the saddle back in June and has been on the Cox Plate radar ever since.

The other major international players include British raider Danceteria raced by Australian Bloodstock, Japan’s Kluger, the Saeed Bin Suoroor-trained Dream Castle for Godolphin’s international operation, and English Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck.

Australian Guineas / All-Star Mile double winner from the autumn Mystic Journey remains at the top of betting despite Adam Trinder’s brilliant Tasmanian-trained mare suffering her first loss of the season when runner-up to 100/1 shot Gatting in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 14.

James Cummings’ Pivotal six-year-old Avilius has now also shot into equal favouritism after the Godolphin galloper’s outstanding victory in last Saturday’s Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

Avilius ran fourth to Winx in last year’s Cox Plate results and will be looking to improve on that in 2019 after a top-class autumn that included wins in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) in Sydney.

Another danger looking to continue the gun record of mares in the Cox Plate winners’ list thanks to the Winx four-peat is Jamie Richards’ incredible eight-time Group 1 winning New Zealander Melody Belle.

Still at generous Cox Plate odds of $19, the ultra-consistent Commands five-year-old scored yet another win at elite level across the Tasman at Hastings over the mile first-up last Saturday.

Other early standouts in the updated Cox Plate betting markets include Team Williams’ Feehan Stakes winner Homesman who chases back-to-back Underwood Stakes wins this weekend and the Phillip Stokes-trained Queensland Derby champ Mr Quickie who ran an eye-catching third in the Makybe Diva first-up.

There are also a dozen three-year-old Cox Plate contenders still in the hunt with Avilius’ stablemate, Flit, the sole filly in the mix.

The 2019 Ladbrokes Cox Plate third acceptances are open until Tuesday October 8, 2019.
