This Saturday the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival continues with Caloundra Cup Day with the meeting’s sole Group status race being the 2019 Sunshine Coast Guineas.
Due to run as Race 6 at 3:57pm (AEST), this weekend’s Group 3 $140,000 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) features 16 three-year-olds led in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au by local filly Baccarat Baby.
The David Vandyke-trained daughter of Casino Prince may be on the short back-up and drawn wide (barrier 13), but she’s the genuine Sunshine Coast Guineas betting market mover backed in from $3.70 to $3.
Last Saturday at Eagle Farm Baccarat Baby gained a late start as an emergency in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).
She could only manage to finish four lengths back 14th behind the Chris Waller-trained winner Invincibella after a nasty run three-wide throughout.
Vandyke is with the bookies and believes his filly is more than capable of bouncing back as she rises back to a mile and takes on the fellow three-year-olds on Saturday.
Before the Tiara, Baccarat Baby finished competitively in two Eagle Farm runs against the colts and geldings.
She ran second to Military Zone in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1400m) at a huge price form barrier 17 of 17 and second to Kolding in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) on Stradbroke Day.
She chases her first win since her narrow Sunshine Coast success in the Listed Princess Stakes (1600m) at the same track and distance as Saturday’s feature back on April 21 and regular rider Micheal Hellyer continues his association in the Group 3.
Hellyer is after his second winning ride in the Sunshine Coast Guineas after his success aboard the Len Treloar-trained Tuskegee Hawk back in 2011.
He said there were genuine excuses for Baccarat Baby in the Tiara last weekend and has no issues with the Heavy-rated Sunshine Coast track this weekend.
“She was never on the track from a wide barrier,” he told AAP.
“Baccarat Baby is unbeaten in three runs at the Sunshine Coast and a wet track would be no worry.”
Four other hopefuls join Baccarat Baby at single-figure Sunshine Coast Guineas odds this year including Junipal ($4.20) and the in-form Statuesquely ($8).
The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Reset colt Junipal is also a Queensland Guineas graduate having run 2.4 lengths back fifth, while Medaglia D’Oro filly Statuesquely is prepared by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott.
Saturday is the filly’s first Black-Type assignment following her nice career start of two wins and two seconds from four Sydney runs, the latest placing over 1800m on a Heavy (8) Randwick track on June 8.
