Honest mare Invincibella saluted in an historical edition of the Tattersall’s Tiara at Eagle Farm handing her trainer Chris Waller a record 18th Group 1 win for the season and her jockey Jason Collett his first win at the highest level.
Backing-up from a successful title defence in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes, which has now produced seven of the Tiara winners since 2009, five-year-old Invincibella finally broke through with a Group 1 success in the $500,000 Brisbane feature.
Rounding out Group 1 racing for the 2018-19 season, the Tattersall’s Tiara result also elevated Waller to a class of his own with the master trainer preparing a record 18 Group 1 winners for the season.
He previously sat equal with the late, great Tommy Smith who trained 17 Group 1 champs during the 1979/80 season.
Waller’s record 18 Group 1 wins for 2018/19 included seven from champion mare Winx, four from The Autumn Sun and two by Very Ellegant.
Invincibella joined Shraaoh, Nature Strip, Patrick Erin and Shillelagh as his other individual Group 1 winners for the season.
Collett was thrilled post-win becoming the third Group 1 winning hoop for his family after Invincibella fended off the Godolphin-raced duo Pohutukawa in second and Savatiano in third to take out the Tiara.
“It’s a long time coming,” he said.
“She copped a fair bump…she managed to pick herself up.
“A very good effort by Chris and his team.
“She’s a multiple Group 2 winner and now a Group 1 winner.”
Invincibella, fifth in last year’s Tattersall’s Tiara held at Doomben, showed true tenacity to get the job done and continued her excellent Queensland strike-rate.
“I think she’s off to the breeding barn after this so it’s a pretty good swansong,” Collett, who before the 2019 Tiara had ridden 11 Group 1 second placegetters, said.
Connections however could now be tempted to race on with the daughter of I Am Invincible, heading not to the breeding barn but to the Gold Coast during next year’s Magic Millions Racing Carnival chasing a third successive victory in the $1 million MM Fillies & Mares race over the summer.
