After three years of failed attempts on Magic Millions Day, six-year-old mare Egyptian Symbol has recorded a huge win for Bjorn Baker in the $1 million Magic Millions Snippets (1200m) on the Gold Coast.

Entering at long $26.00 odds with Ladbrokes, Egyptian Symbol beat home favourites Houtzen ($2.30) and Usain Bowler ($4.00), both of which failed to figure in the placings.

Seven lengths off the lead at the final turn, a late dash on the outside saw Egyptian Symbol race from last to first to win by three-quarters of a length. A gun run by second place-getter Fiery Heights kept Houtzen at bay down the straight, while Dothraki was unlucky not to finish higher than third.

Following on from two straight 10th placings at Randwick earlier in October, Egyptian Symbol was first-up on Saturday, a factor Baker now thinks could be the key on Magic Millions Day.

“Four years in a row, there’s a lot of ways to skin a cat but I think fresh up is key, and it worked out brilliantly today” Baker told Sky Racing after the win.

By 13-time Group 1 place-getter Egyptian Raine, Egyptian Symbol has now won five races first-up. Saturday’s gun run was largely due to jockey Jason Collett, as the pair made full use of the outside draw (barrier 11) to swoop from the outside.

“She flies first-up, and it was a pretty hot once the draws came out that told us where we’re going to be, and it worked out for the better” Collett said.

“We’ve come close a couple times in a couple of bigger races, but this is good.”

Baker also credited Collett’s ride, but admits luck has played a factor in the past.

“She’s been a stalwart, this is the fourth time she’s been back, I think she was probably a little bit unlucky in the three-year old race, and it looked like she unlucky today, but great ride Jason. ”
