Ciaron Maher & David Eustace trained Dubious has drawn barrier 7 ahead of Saturday’s $2 million Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast.

The lightly raced two-year-old is unbeaten in two career starts, having last won at Eagle Farm earlier in December after claiming the Group 3 Breeders Plate (1000m) at Randwick in the Spring.

Dubious is preparing to tackle the 1200m journey for the first time this weekend, but according to Maher, the Not A Single Doubt colt has plenty of experience to his name after racing on several different tracks around Australia.

“It certainly helps, young horses when they travel, the more they see, the better educated they are really” Maher said following Tuesday’s barrier draw.

“The Gold Coast is his tenth track he’s galloped on, he’s done three in Victoria, four in NSW and three up here (QLD).”

Dubious jumped from an identical gate at Eagle Farm last month to win by half a length over a talented field of two-year-olds. After originally opening at $8.00 with Ladbrokes prior to the barrier draw, Maher’s hopeful has since firmed into $7.00 with the bookmaker.

“That run really brought him on, I really wanted to go from the 1000m to progress to the 1200m and target the race, and I thought his grand final being this Saturday would be perfect timing. He’s very clean winded, he’d hardly blow a candle out this morning” Maher said when asked on Dubious’ fitness ahead of the race.

Maher should also feel confident in jockey Michael Walker, who has already ridden three winners to start the New Year. Walker, coupled with Dubious’ lovable racing style, gives Maher every chance to claim the the prize-money this weekend.

“Michael Walker likened him to himself I think so, that’s the best attritbute of him, his temperament, he’s very chilled, and then when the gates open he’s very switched on, he’s everything you’d want in a little colt.

We’ve got all the boxes ticked for the barrier draw and he worked well this morning, so we’re getting closer.”
