It was the young colt Yes Yes Yes who scored the upset in The Everest 2019 results, Chris Waller’s outstanding three-year-old defeating a gun field of seasoned sprinters to win the third edition of the world’s richest turf race.

Waller not only trained the $14 million The Everest winning colt but the iconic Sydney horseman of Winx fame also selected the brilliant Rubick colt to fill his slot in the weight-for-age buy-in.

Yes Yes Yes came off back-to-back Rosehill seconds against his own age, the latest seeing him narrowly beaten in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 28.

Kept fresh since for his shot in The Everest (1200m) back down over the six-furlongs, the now very valuable stallion prospect was ridden to victory by big race specialist Glen Boss.

With Boss – a triple Cox Plate and three-time Melbourne Cup winning hoop – in the saddle, Yes Yes Yes ($9) was able to get to the outside on the straight and charge into the lead to hold off the luckless beaten favourite Santa Ana Lane.

“This is huge. What a feeling!” Boss said. 

“This takes me back to ’05 (Makybe Diva’s 3rd Melbourne Cup).

“I feel electric. I don’t know what to say. My body is on fire right now.

“Thanks to Chris Waller for putting his faith in me.

“This beautiful colt right here. What are you worth now champion?

“He is quality. I galloped him last week. He gave me goosebumps last weeks and today he has given me electric shocks.

“I couldn’t believe the electronic turn of speed he showed.”

“I was wary of these great sprinters, you can’t give them too much of a start. He flew.”

The Anthony Freedman-trained Santa Ana Lane was so unlucky getting bailed up behind horses before getting out from behind the eventual winner and give chase, but the seven-year-old five-time Group 1 champion just ran out of room unable to run down the young winner.

“He went super. The winner surprised me a bit how quickly it went. With the weight he put a little break on me. He ran really gallant my guy but I just couldn’t reel him in,” Santa Ana Lane’s jockey Mark Zahra said.

It was a great start in The Everest with Sunlight leading early before the Moir Stakes winner Nature Strip did plenty of work to get to the fence at the front and set the pace.

It quickly became about Yes Yes Yes in the closing stages however when he and Boss came with the run winding up and beating Santa Ana Lane (2^nd) along with last start Schillaci Stakes winner Trekking (3^rd) who came from last-to-third.

“That was so much fun. He ran really well – well done to the team, they prepared him in fantastic order. I’m really excited and I didn’t even win the race,” Josh Parr, aboard Trekking, said after the race.

Adding even further merit to The Everest victory by the gun three-year-old, Yes Yes Yes broke the track record winning in 1 minute 7.32 seconds.

“That was very surreal. I had a very good plan in my head about what I wanted to do. Chris (Waller) was in my corner about how I wanted to ride the horse. I just wanted to be behind the grey horse (Classique Legend), somewhere around Nash (Rawiller), that was my plan,” Boss added. 

“He was taking me everywhere I wanted to go. When I peeled out three and when I asked him, his turn of speed was of Group 1 quality only. Jeez he sprinted quickly. His sectionals will say that he did.

“That is an experience. That was one hell of an experience.

“This is about Chris Waller. This will mean a lot to him. He knows he has got a valuable, valuable colt here.”

Yes Yes Yes subsequently firmed from $17 into just $6 to take out the Group 1 $2 million Darley Sprint Classic (1200m) down the Flemington straight on November 9.

The record-breaking The Everest winner however is more likely to run on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, November 2, in the Group 1 $1.5 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) back against his own age.

“There is so much at risk. You have to go to the owners in Coolmore plus the original owners as he wasn’t my horse. You have to suggest it can win an Everest, you can’t say you’re going to run second and third. Then you have to go to the slot-holders to choose it,” a typically emotional Waller said post-win. 

“To tell you the truth it was an amazing feeling. Where we’ve been with Winx, where she took us has set us up for days like this. She took us on an emotional ride.

“You talk to people through the week. These horses run all the time. People can relate to them. Half of them might be back next year, maybe more. These are the best sprinters in Australia. People want to see them run two weeks beforehand. It’s not just about one race. That is why it will really go ahead.”
