2019 Caulfield Cup Barriers & Betting Update: Finche Draws Wide

The Chris Waller-trained favourite in Caulfield Cup 2019 betting for this Saturday, Finche, has drawn out wide with barrier 19 in the mile-and-a-half-classic.

The final field for this year’s Group 1 $5 million Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (2400m) was confirmed on Wednesday with a capacity line-up of 18 stayers plus four emergencies.

Waller chases his maiden top four finish in the race saddling-up two Caulfield Cup horses in 2019 with stablemates Finche (19) and Brimham Rocks (20) both suffering wide barriers.

With the four Caulfield Cup emergencies drawing between barriers 3 – 12 however, Waller’s duo could come into barriers 15 and 16 respectively.

Fourth in last year’s Melbourne Cup, talented Frankel six-year-old Finche is at $6 in the latest Caulfield Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Two back the chestnut won a Group 3 over 2000m at Randwick before a last start second to the also Waller-trained Kings Will Dream in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).

Michael Walker comes aboard this year’s Caulfield Cup favourite, the hoop also after his first victory in the race.

Brimham Rocks meanwhile made the Caulfield Cup field via a win in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at the track on September 21 and is a $26 chance to improve on his last start ninth in Randwick’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m).

Following Finche in the updated Caulfield Cup betting markets at $7.50 is Japanese raider Mer De Glace also drawn right out in barrier 21.

Damian Lane partners the flying Rulership entire who comes off five straight wins back home.

Mer De Glace may be in red hot form in Japan, but the galloper is yet to win over further than 2200m and so faces a test fresh over the 2400m in the Caulfield Cup.

Hartnell carries the 58kg topweight in this year’s Caulfield Cup, the always-honest Godolphin galloper at $19 odds as he tackles the race for the first time as a nine-year-old.

“Hartnell is no stranger to big weights and no stranger to big handicaps,” Godolphin Bloodstock Manager Jason Walsh said.

“He’s such a versatile horse, and has won Group 1s from 1400m up to a mile and a half.”

The James Cummings-trained veteran ran third in the 2017 Melbourne Cup and comes off a third in the Turnbull Stakes when under a length beaten, but hasn’t won a race since last year’s Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) over 12 months ago.

Two Caulfield Cup winners have carried 58kg to victory in the past seven years with Dunaden (2012) and Admire Rakti (2014), while last year’s topweight Best Solution (57.5kg) also got the job done.

In the past 20 years 5 Caulfield Cup winners carried topweight including Best Solution (57.5kg in 2018)

There are three other single-figure fancies to join the Caulfield Cup winners’ list in 2019 with the Lindsay Park import Constantinople on debut down under, Queensland Derby winner Mr Quickie and the Danny O’Brien-trained lightweight Vow And Declare all equal on $8.50.
