A number of the top-fancied mares to take out...
The in-form West Australian galloper Galaxy Star is set to shine for the locals in the 2018 Group 1 $1m Kirin Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot in Perth on Saturday.
Perth’s leading jockey William Pike will partner Galaxy Star in the fifteen horse Railway Stakes field after being aboard the Grant and Alana Williams trained six year old for ten of her twelve race starts which includes eight of his nine wins.
Galaxy Star has worked her way up through the grades and goes into Saturday’s Group 1 Railway Stakes on the back of a win in the Group 3 $150,000 South African Airways Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) at Ascot in Perth on November 3.
Victoria’s leading trainer Darren Weir has taken a large contingent of horses to Perth for the 2018 Summer Racing Carnival and two of his team, Peaceful State and Iconoclasm are included in the final field for the Railway Stakes.
Apprentice Ben Allen gets the sit on Peaceful State again who is coming off a last start third behind Best Of Days and Le Romain in the Group 1 $1m Kennedy Mile (1600m) at Flemington on November 3 while Craig Williams rides Iconoclasm who finished eighth in the same race.
Achernar Star is another one of the locals striving to hold off the invasion of the Eastern State trained gallopers and Perth trainer Simon Miller is hoping for a good result at Tuesday night’s Railway Stakes barrier draw to help his chances.
“If we can draw a gate that will be great,” Miller told Sky Racing’s Racing HQ.
“He has raced really well from awkward gates in the past because he breaks clean, but when you are going up against the big guns, you need to have everything in your favour.”
“Barriers are probably crucial, but he is very very good and he will give this a big shake Saturday.”
Shaun McGruddy has been aboard Achernar Star for his three runs this campaign and gets the ride again in the Railway Stakes following his narrow defeat last start when second to Gatting in the Group 2 $250,000 WAROA Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) at Ascot in Perth on November 10.
The Darren McAuliffe trained Gatting, with Damian Lane in the saddle, is also a final acceptor for the 2018 Railway Stakes.
Galaxy Star has been installed as the $3.60 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Railway Stakes while the Darren Weir trained pair of Peaceful State at $5.50 and Iconoclasm at $7.50 are the next two in the betting.
