Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Happy Clapper savaged the line to record an outstanding win in the 2018 Canterbury Stakes at Royal Randwick this afternoon.
Global Glamour took up her usual position at the front of the Canterbury Stakes field, while jockey Blake Shinn was able to settle Happy Clapper in a lovely midfield position.
Tim Clark asked Global Glamour for an extra effort at the top of the straight and she gave a nice kick, but she simply couldn’t match Happy Clapper in the final stages and he was far too strong in the final 100 metres.
Trainer Patrick Webster believes that Happy Clapper has returned to the races in the best form of his career and he confirmed that the Canterbury Stakes winner will press on to the George Ryder Stakes, Doncaster Mile and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
“When I saw him today I thought that he was going to run great and he did,” Webster said.
“He looks to be better than ever.
“I just hope that I haven’t taken too much out of him first-up, but who cares it is a Group 1!
“He can run second to the great mare (in the George Ryder Stakes) and be a live chance in the Doncaster.”
Jockey Blake Shinn gave Happy Clapper an ideal run in transit and he was quick to pay credit to the toughness that the two-time Group 1 winner showed in the final stages of the Canterbury Stakes.
“He was primed, he had two nice trials and he goes well fresh,” Shinn said.
“From barrier 1 I was just hoping that the cards would fall my way, I had to extricate myself coming around the turn on the back of Tye Angland, but fortunately he is a big horse and I had a lapful under me.
“Once he found daylight, he really finished the race off strongly and it was a great effort.
“He has set himself up nicely.
“He is seven-years-old now, but he has been sparingly raced and he has been treated with kid gloves his whole career.
“There is no reason that he can’t reach the best form of his career.
“He gave Winx a good run for her money last prep and it will be a good rematch in the Ryder.”
