The well-supported, clear Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes 2018 favourite Written By franked the lead-up Prelude form and enjoyed a dominant win in the two-years-old classic handing jockey Jordan Childs his maiden Group 1 success.
Prepared by Grahame Begg, Written Tycoon colt Written By was bred by Begg’s father and former top trainer Neville giving the Group 1 $1.5 million Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) even more meaning to the Pinecliff Mt Eliza-based horseman.
“It’s just outstanding,” Begg said after the race had been run and won.
It was also a special Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes result for Childs who broke his Group 1 maiden status as a hoop taking out the same race his father Greg won aboard the Bart Cummings-trained Riva Diva back in 1992.
“It’s fantastic,” Childs said post-win.
“He’s been a tricky horse.
“It all comes down to these big days when it really counts.
“To have won, my first [Group 1] being a Blue Diamond, it’s just fantastic.”
The punters celebrated a sixth Blue Diamond Stakes win in eight years as Written By was heavily-backed late into $5.50 favouritism at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au.
The up-and-comer didn’t disappoint, taking his career record up to three-from-three and becoming the first winner of the Group 2 Blue Diamond C&G Prelude to win the Group 1 since Sepoy (2011).
Drawn out wide in barrier in barrier 15 (of 16), Written By proved his class and ability crossing early to sit second to triple-figure pacemaker Crossing The Abbey.
By the top of the straight Written By and Childs had the lead as the other top two-year-olds of the season began chase.
He was too strong however and in the end held off the fast-finishing Lindsay Park-trained Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude winner Enbihaar ($21) who overcame the far outside barrier (16) to add value to the Blue Diamond Stakes quinella letting down late out wide.
The Tony McEvoy-trained I Am Invincible filly Oohood ($9) further franked the form of the Prelude lead-up having run second to Enbihaar a fortnight back before finishing on her heels for third in the Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Trifecta.
“He just doesn’t know how to lay down,” Begg said of the Blue Diamond Stakes winner Written By.
“I just knew after his first-up run he’d just improve leaps and bounds.
“He’s just had the best couple of weeks since the Prelude and his work on Monday morning had to be seen to be believed. I just knew he was spot on.
“He just let down so well, so proud.
“This horse, three runs for three wins, it’s pretty special.
“And it’s onwards and upwards.”
Begg said there was a chance that should Written By come through the run well he could be Sydney-bound next month for a shot at the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, the Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 24.
“We’ll let the horse do the talking for us,” he said.
“We’ll see [about the Golden Slipper].”
Written By currently sits as an $8 shot in pre-field Golden Slipper odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with markets led by the gun fillies Sunlight and Estijaab at $4.80 who ran one-two in the Silver Slipper Stakes in Sydney on Saturday.
